People are spontaneously posting up near any laborers or street vendors they spot. Just saw a rapid responder guarding a man working on a building exterior. Many things are terrible today but lord, this stuff matters.

There are a tremendous number of ICE watchers out in Rogers Park this afternoon after some early morning abductions.

People are guarding churches and patrolling alleyways. Ran into Alderperson Hadden. First timers tell us they're primed and ready to use their whistles.

I won't use any organizing energy opposing the criminalization of feds, but I really think people should be focusing on restorative initiatives for victims / communities first. We already saw the results of Jan 6 prosecutions---they're already back on the streets.

While I think ICE agents should face criminal charges for their kidnapping of immigrants, they should face long, and perhaps lifetime, prison sentences for anything like this involving kids. An ICE agent willing to do this is not someone who should be out among society even after Dems retake power.

ICE kidnapped a 7th-grader with a pending asylum claim and spirited him out of state without notifying his parents, seemingly with the cooperation of the local police in Everett, MA.

The priest on the right is holding a monstrance. It’s used to display a piece of communion bread — which Catholics believe becomes the literal body of Christ when it’s consecrated — for worship.

A monstrance is normally only used in *very* solemn ceremonies.

I also have no nostalgia for the road to fascism, which is a trap I think a lot of liberal and progressive folks are falling into—romanticizing the conditions that preceded this moment of acceleration. The path that led to this mess is not the way out.

This comes as a response to Israel intercepting the Global Sumud Flotilla convoy.

Take heart. The fight is not over. ONE Flotilla vessel ALMOST reached the shores of Gaza, but it’s more profound than that: it’s the closest any aid vessel has got in *18 YEARS*!!!

At the Broadview ICE facility, an ICE agent tried to run dozens of protesters over with an SUV as we walked on a public crosswalk.

He kept driving for about a full football field until ICE barraged us with pepper balls.

As ICE continues to terrorize Chicagoland, protesters gathered this morning outside the Broadview detention center—throwing stuffed animals at DHS agents, playing music through tear gas assaults, and putting their bodies on the line to stop ICE vehicles. My latest.

Media crackdowns are a core part of the fascist playbook. As more repression looms, @neginowl.bsky.social & I write,
those of us in media need to ground ourselves in our own power, seeking creative ways to raise our voices and rooting ourselves in our solidarities.

If we are going to have any chance of preserving healthcare for trans people, reproductive care or frankly any kinds of care the regime wants to eliminate providers & institutions are going to have to band together to vigorously fight civil subpoenas & vague threats of criminalization at every turn

Wapo article does a good job covering two realities: How deeply watching a parents‘ immigration arrest affects kids, and how DC residents are organizing “walking buses” and neighborhood lookouts to help kids with immigrant parents get safely to school. wapo.st/3VNYZ08
They watched ICE detain their dad. Now D.C. neighbors escort them to school.
Immigrant neighborhoods across the District have organized “walking school buses” to shuttle kids to classes during President Donald Trump’s federalization of D.C. police.

While it's true that the "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" has been entirely sanitized to the point of context collapse, @melissaf-b.bsky.social wrote a great book that recontextualizes it and I do recommend "How to Have an Enemy: Righteous Anger and the Work of Peace."

Until the trans woman murdered down the block, the kid dead of gender dysphoria, the ICE detainee dead in custody, the auntie dead for lack of healthcare, and EVERY PERSON DEAD IN GAZA are all universally grieved, I am unlikely to shed a tear for Charlie Kirk. All are victims of political violence.

The longtime fear-mongering about crime in major cities is, of course, copaganda and is being used as a pretext for occupation. It has more to do with criminalizing and controlling specific populations i.e. Black, brown, unhoused, and poor people, and not others.

The vast majority of Americans, 81%, see crime as a “major problem” in large cities, according to recent polling from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Statistics show overall crime is down across the nation, with some cities reporting 30-year lows. https://to.pbs.org/4gc4aAt

enormous development in the Cop City RICO case today: the Judge indicated he would be dismissing *at least* the RICO and Arson counts of the indictment, which would eliminate 56 out of 61 people from the indictment.

Official answer tomorrow, and it will certainly be appealed.

This is such a terrible and anti-democratic idea. The mayor of NYC should not need the support of the NYPD. There are pragmatic reasons why the mayor needs to have a working relationship with the police, but the NYPD doesn't get a veto over what voters want. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/08/n...
Mr. Mamdani must find common ground with the police to avoid the tensions that plagued Mr. de Blasio, said Mitchell Moss, a professor of urban policy at New York University.

Mr. de Blasio tried to bring changes to the department, but he angered the rank and file. He defended a staffer who had ridiculed the police on social media and gave a speech describing how he had warned his biracial son that he could have problems with the police. The tension culminated in a painfully public protest in 2015 by officers who turned their backs on Mr. de Blasio at a police funeral.

“You can’t be mayor of New York without having the support of the Police Department,” Professor Moss said. “De Blasio never recovered from the loss of respect police gave him.”

Mr. de Blasio balanced calls for reform with his choice for commissioner: William Bratton, a well-established leader whose experience running the department in the 1990s comforted many police unions.
