Beyond excited my profile of the inimitable George Daniel is appearing as the cover story in this month's Penn Stater! #fishing #flyfishing
pennstatermag.com
Our July/Aug '25 issue is online now (and in member mailboxes soon). Features include a look at 125 yrs of the Blue Band; a Q&A with Tom Verducci, arguably the most respected voice in baseball; and a profile of George Daniel, who is leading Penn State’s iconic fly-fishing program. pennstatermag.com.

Instant classic. Rooting for the Tigers but happy for the Mariners and folks here in the PNW. What an epic ballgame.

The baseball gods are on one this postseason.

If you care about the future of our planet, one of the best things you can do is go fishing. Better still, take your child or grandchild. My latest column, on how to build a consensus to combat climate change: more "boots on the water." Gift link. wapo.st/4n1Umee
Column | Why you should go fishing, even if you think you’d be terrible at it
There are ecological and political reasons to try fly-fishing in the rivers of America.

No disrespect to Jason Borger, naturally.

A lot of people say they would want to be Brad Pitt’s casting double in “A River Runs Through It,” but me, I’d be much better at the Rapid Double gig. #flyfishing

Waterproofing is important but feels like table stakes.

I think zippers make the biggest difference. Can I zip / unzip with one hand, without pulling a muscle? Does the zipper feel pretty robust, like it'll last?

And cupholders. Will a big Nalgene fit?

If you're using weighted flies, no, not at all...just give it a four or five second count to let it sink a little before you start your retrieve, and don't strip the hell out of it...let it sink again a little between strips.

Thanks! I'm gonna try to put more effort into improving my casting in 2026, like, actually putting in practice time not on the water, getting a little bit of a practice routine together. Like you point out, it's an area where keeping the rust off pays dividends.

Thanks Graeme! Appreciate the lead.

Thanks! I appreciate it. I'm interested in Korkers, my only reticence is whether the removable soles are, like, sturdy enough? That's always been the part that fails the most on my other wading boots, felt soles peeling off. Have they been pretty reliable for you?

Thank you! Science Bluesky has delivered a ton of great leads!

Help me, science Bluesky! Anyone know any fish biologists working on hybridized trout and other exotic and rare trout / salmonid subspecies? #biology #marinebiology #fishbiology
