#AcademicSky I'm trying to compile a list of academic conferences (> 1.000 participants) that were supposed to be organised in USA in 2025/2026 but that were canceled or made hybrid. (I saw some such instances here I think, but hard to find them again)

Let me know if you know of such conferences.

Macron remarks are notable- some quotes: "We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks that are controlled either by large American entrepreneurs or large Chinese companies, whose interests are not at all the survival or proper functioning of our democracies."

Precies. This is the main issue with the debate here. No one really asks the (Dutch) students…politicians know better, or don’t care since students don’t vote or not consistently.

So, with Jane Goodall passing, I am reminded of a very fun incident where her institute sent a furious complaint over this cartoon on her behalf, only to have Goodall herself find it hilarious and go on to write the introduction to the collection it appeared in. A fantastic sense of humour.
Two monkeys sit on a branch, one picks a hair off the other. Caption: "well well, another blond hair, conducting a little more research with that Goodall Tramp."

It constantly surprises me how much political debate in the Netherlands involves failing to acknowledge certain basic facts:

- the crime rate in the Netherlands is very low

- the number of asylum seekers is falling sharply

NL has a moderate problem with higher rates of crime among ethnic Moroccan young men, in a generally ever safer country. It has a major problem with a politics dominated by the fanning of race hatred.

RIP Jane Goodall, a giant in her field, and whose expertise can apparently also help us understand contemporary politics…

🚨 New paper in @thejop.bsky.social

Why do politicians often misperceive what citizens' policy positions are?

@simonotjes.bsky.social and I study ~10,000 estimates of public opinion by politicians in Denmark & the Netherlands to uncover the sources of these (mis)perceptions

interesting discussion of the intellectual/Germanic origins of geopolitics in the US - "during WWII, many US academics and politicians condemned geopolitics at the very moment that state institutions were trying to appropriate it".
