Sounds like this person wasn't actually watching the show. As this article clarifies, the plot and character development all happen with actors facial expressions. Which means if you're scrolling on your phone, you're missing it all.

If you are near Philadelphia, have 123 dollars, and roughly 28 cubic feet of space to store 1,600 VHS tapes in reasonably climate controlled conditions until I can get up there, I will retrieve this collection of almost guaranteed vital archival value and digitize its entirety.

This was a worthwhile critique of media that depicted gay men as sexless accessories for the self-actualization of straight characters, but it makes no sense applied to a show exclusively dedicated to the story of two hot dudes who love fucking each other.

okay but it's so funny to refer to the performances in Heated Rivalry as "wooden" it's like tell me you have never met hockey players before without telling me you've never met hockey players before. it's a show as much about the broad strokes of hockey culture as it is a romance

And it's so great to be in a moment where it doesn't feel like people will be jerks when I say that (not admit it - it's not a dirty secret)
