Restoration work being carried out on the Buttes in Polygon Wood therefore is currently off limits to the public walking up there. The cemetery is still accessible to the public.

As my very good friend says, “I have been that guy. Life can sometimes be strangely normal amongst the madness!”

I was reading (Official History) about the German assault of 21 March 1918 particularly in relation to 59th (2nd North Midland) Division… rather surprisingly one battalion was playing football whilst only a short distance away others were fighting for their lives…

FOXTON (ST. ANDREW) CHURCHYARD, Leicestershire.
This double headstone commemorates a father and his son, who are buried together. Lucy Brown wife and mother must have been heartbroken.

Inside the church at Neuve Chapelle, check it out when you’re there. Couple of small CWGC cemeteries close by too.

… Pte. Brown had his arm shattered, but continued on through an intense barrage until he arrived at the close support lines and found an officer.
He was so spent that he fell down the dugout steps, but retained consciousness long enough to hand over his message…. He was 19 yrs old!

“…he carried on a tremendous fight with the advancing enemy. Although under intense barrage fire and mortally wounded, he stood on the parapet of the trench, bombed the enemy continuously and directed the defence in such a manner as to infuse a spirit of utmost resistance into his men…”

Iconic views from the viewing tower at Dud Corner. Two VCs buried here, with a number of other VCs remembered on the walls. Beautiful piping by the London Irish Rifles Association whilst there.
