This is why we fund scientists to study things like oyster slobber even if you don’t think it sounds important
leahmcelrath.bsky.social
⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

Quand les fascistes exigent que vous déclariez solonellement que la violence politique est à proscrire, c’est qu’ils veulent s’assurer d’être les seuls à pouvoir l’exercer.

Contre vous.

"The very thing that’s exciting about solar energy — its abundance and low cost — also makes it of little interest to investors. Sun (and wind) are so freely available all around us that it’s hard to hoard them and make big profits from them."

Amazing, @lindamcquaig.bsky.social!

Linda McQuaig: This is the national project Mark Carney should have chosen
Long considered a luxury for chardonnay-sipping environmentalists, solar energy now has the potential to become the energy choice of beer-drinking workers concerned about the cost of living.

As criticism of Canada’s oligopolies mount, the establishment media is taking another tack—advising elites invest big in them.

Harrison Samphir an @nikbarryshaw.bsky.social analyze how the media is celebrating the benefits of a cost-of-living crisis for everyone else.

I am having a hard time reconciling "Charlie Kirk was a fierce advocate of open dialogue and free expression" with "we must identify and persecute everyone who is insufficiently mournful"
After Charlie Kirk's death, teachers and professors nationwide fired or disciplined over social media posts
At least a dozen faculty and staff have faced fallout over insensitive comments online.

Jesus Christ.

A standing ovation — from Liberals too — for Charlie Kirk in the Canadian House of Commons.

You can (and should) oppose political violence without doing all this, you know.

Charlie Kirk's death was a tragedy.
But he built his name on provocation and white supremacy.
He said that gun deaths of innocents was "worth it."
On Mark Carney's first day as PM in Parliament Liberals gave Kirk a standing ovation.
Ceding ground to extremism won't make them nicer.

Canada's in a real bind. Our current moment requires a massive increase in state capacity *across the board*. But the Carney government (ie, Mark Carney) seems to be ideologically opposed to a greater role for government outside defence. Ideologies die hard, even when reality is banging at the door.

I just did a radio interview where I highlighted how many truly ambitious "nation-building" ideas there are out there. The one thing they have in common, though, is that they require public money and expertise. Which makes them non-starters for a government focused on tax cuts and austerity.

Carney said that Canada has the best trade deal of anyone with the US, that over 85% of our goods are protected by trade agreement from tariffs. But this is false.

Even CUSMA-certified goods are being hammered with massive +100% or more tariffs, & severe bureaucracy. The US is not honoring the deal

It’s been interesting but not surprising to see the critics of the effort to put all the focus on antitrust and competition policy be proven right.

Now is the time to throw everything at the tech companies while investing in public, non-profit alternatives.

I mean, they've been pretty up front about the QUADRUPLING of military spending as basically being about building up a "defence-industrial base."

I think it will be disastrously inefficient, undemocratic and corrupt, but it's basically high-tech subsidies, dressed up in natsec garb.
