While at Gawker, Hamilton Nolan wrote a disgusting article about Ava Cordero, a teenage trans girl who was an Epstein victim and one of the earliest whistleblowers on his proclivities.

And now that it’s irrefutable how their transmisogynist smear campaigns are part and parcel of how the American empire’s most important sex trafficking ring operates, we desperately need the world to look us in the eye, owe us a great, big apology and never forget that WE FUCKING TOLD YOU SO!

They're going to keep grinding you down to nothing and replacing you with a college student in five years if you don't stand up for yourselves. Then they'll do the same thing to that kid. They've been doing it for decades now.

Disrupt the game industry. It needs to be disrupted.

Getting gender euphoria out of being absolutely baffled by this weird shit.

The... Bird is smoking? Okay? Sure. Have fun, dude.
Yeah, this is really it for me. This really sums up everything about the fascist death drive, the utter illiteracy of conservatives driven by nothing but aesthetic, and the unthinking masculinist bravado underlying it all.

The male urge to fucking die in a frozen wasteland to own the libs.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

It shouldn't take an inspiring victim to arouse universal outrage at state violence. It shouldn't take a white victim. It shouldn't take a male victim. It shouldn't take a straight victim.

I would be very surprised if a full accounting in the future didn't reveal more than one mass grave at the detention centers. If they're behaving this way in public, what's happening out of sight must be many times more brutal.
Imagine what’s happening in the camps.
Imagine how much they’d be lying about what happened without all the videos showing it from multiple angles.

As an amateur historian, nations only act like this when they're very, very sick.

Nonviolent, unobstructive actions are punishable by death. After the state wantonly murders you in the street, the government will lie about it, the opposition will beg for inaction, and the media will distort reality.

Are you ready to believe you live in an authoritarian state yet?

Whatever small protections the brief liberalism of post-War America offered are gone. The illusion of any form of American liberty is gone. Even if you thought it an institution worth protecting, the institution has been abolished in all but name.

Why cling to patriotism for a fake country?

TBH, I have zero sympathy for Europeans. Fuck America and anyone loyal to this pathetic country, but Europeans don't get to pretend this isn't just the weapon they've gleefully pointed at the rest of the world finally pointing at them.

Sucks when that boomerang comes 'round, huh?
This man is talking about stealing a country at gunpoint from nations the US is allied with. Of course Europeans hate us. You would feel the same way if you were in their place. American voters put this man in power, he didn’t seize it this time.

I'm incredibly lucky in that my parents have been incredibly accepting of me, but when my little sister came out ~2011 (she came out first of three), she had to fight to get them to accept that she wasn't just making things up.

My dad's bi. He lost friends to AIDS. He did AIDS activism in the 80s.
I do have to point out that even with a more-accepting society, there is a gulf between "I am okay with queers" and "I am okay with my kid being a queer". People can support LGBT rights in the abstract and then get spooked when their own precious cinnamon roll makes them a "non-traditional family".

The thing is, empires aren't supposed to have a date-certain you can describe as the day said empire died. Empires die slow and ugly.

The US may well be able to date the end of its empire to the 18th of January 2026, entirely self-inflicted.

British Leftists: "Britain should stop clinging to the insane notion that the UK is a relevant world power."

Monkey's Paw: *curls*
Helpfully demonstrates how a large section of the British political and media class don't actually care about the things they use to buttress their positions, like values, morality, principles, intellectual rigour and so on, and that what they actually respect and valorise are dominance and force.
Ceding all forms of autonomy to Trump is now a well-established position within Britain's media and among British media owners.

I have to admit, I didn't have 'full collapse into 19th century international relations norms' on my bingo card for the second Trump Administration. I was prepared for all sorts of horrors, and yet somehow the horrors are worse and stupider than I imagined.

I'm torn between cynically noting that things in the OECD are getting worse, the optimism of someone whose undergraduate work was on how revolutions happen, knowing what he says about the wall is true, and frustration at having spent thirty-someodd years behind the wall, waiting for it to fall.

Seriously, go to your Bluesky Settings and Content and Media page and toggle off the "Autoplay videos and GIFs" option right now.

If you don't want to continuously see the video, that'll at least deactivate it from playing when you scroll.

Cops lie, and even if the truth is revealed that they lied, they will always get away with it because cops are a protected class. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.

The purpose of the international legal order is not to truly constrain powerful states. It never has been, because such constraints would depend on a single actor with a monopoly on violence.

Vulgar realism (so... Realism, by and large) would have you believe that it thus serves no purpose.

this seems small in comparison, but we need a boycott of the World Cup. we need to see empty stadiums, teams staying home, and massive financial losses. it gives me no pleasure as a soccer fan, but anything less is a tacit endorsement of war crimes.
The US invasion of Venezuela is a clear violation of international law and the UN Charter. Celebrating the capture of Maduro, Donald Trump went further, calling it an “attack on sovereignty” itself.

Countries the world over must work together to rein in the United States before it’s too late.

It appears to me that the Trump Doctrine is that Donald Trump cannot face justice in American courts, but any nation that can get their hands on him is free to charge him with whatever the hell they want.
