Interesting is that we have some records about Atheist in the Middle Ages.
Also, I’m pretty sure there were atheists in ancient Pagan societies? Like, at least a few Greeks and Vikings had to wonder “What if the gods don’t actually exist and this world is all we get?”

Reforging of the Sword by Darrell K Sweet - my favorite fantasy artist.

From his 1982 Tolkien Calendar. Depicts a woodland Rivendell forge. The elven smiths are not as ethereal as often depicted. Is that dapper fellow next to Gandalf supposed to be Aragorn or Elrond?

Interesting question: Should European governments speak to the growing authoritarianism in the US?
Gastbeitrag von Maximilian Mayer und mir @derstandard.at:

Trump ist flooding the zone with Außenpolitik shit - und Europa ist so damit beschäftigt, dass der autoritäre Umbau der USA hier politisch nicht zur Sprache kommt.

Falsch, finden wir.

@maximilianiras.bsky.social

Utilitarian philosopher R.M. Hare has a discussion about how to bring up your kids if you were solely concerned with their happiness. He says: teach them not to seek happiness directly but be nice to people, make some true friends, get an absorbing hobby and a fulfilling job, be a good neighbour etc

NEW: A baby held in immigration detention became so sick, she had to be rushed to a hospital in severe respiratory distress.

“She was at the brink of dying,” a lawyer told me.

But the girl didn’t go home after her 10-day hospital stay; instead, ICE put her and her mother back in lock up at Dilley.
Toddler hospitalized with respiratory failure was returned to ICE detention without prescribed medication, lawsuit says
The 18-month-old was sent back to a South Texas facility after days in intensive care with severe respiratory distress, according to a federal lawsuit.

Yes, the USA is going to fund and otherwise support far-right parties in Europe, many of which are also pro-Russian.

And please, no pearl-clutching. This was already public knowledge. The USA put this in its national security strategy published last year.

Truth to be told, I believe that our father and mothers of the basic law did crack the code for a stable government. If we had a different voting law, I would believe that our republic could run another hundred years. (Except Federalism, that is bullshit in our system)

Yeah. American apocalyptic thought as it developed in the 19th century really started to hone in on the idea of a single Antichrist, leaning into the Book of Revelation (which, to be clear, is unclear on this point). The epistles and Gospels assume there’ll be many deceptive Christ figures.
I think that really gets at the heart of it. Fundamentalists and popular media often depict the antichrist as a single figure of great power, when in reality anyone who can be described as “a wolf in sheep’s clothing” would qualify. So there have perhaps been many antichrists throughout history.

Rod Dreher called Obergefell "the Waterloo of religious conservatism" and initially advocated strategic retreat to rural enclaves. Adrian Vermeule had a different idea: infiltrate liberal institutions and use the administrative state to impose a Catholic conception of the good.
