Winter Olympics start tonight! I wrote about Jacquie Pierri, a women's hockey player who is also a sustainable energy engineer and vocal climate advocate when she's not winning championships around the world. Such a badass. You need to hear her story: www.climatecoloredgoggles.com/p/jacquie-pi...

Photograph of sunspot group 4366. Not the greatest focus, but I was testing out some new camera gear I haven't quite got the hang of. Nonetheless, these are some big sunspots.

This is not a "possibility," it is very, very obviously what's currently happening. The only reason people in power want to view it as a possibility rather than an ongoing fact is that they are scared of the implications. If it's the latter, they have to *do* something. History calls. It's scary!
"The most disturbing possibility is that the president is creating a militia which answers only to himself ... Abroad, from El Salvador to the Philippines, would-be despots often turn the army and the police against their people in the name of keeping order." www.economist.com/leaders/2026...

On balance, I haven't been a big fan of the Abundance folks, but his association with CBS News sure makes my opinion of Derek Thompson drop several notches. Pity.

I'm admittedly a little fuzzy on the precise contours of what constitutes "soft", but I suspect it's safe to say that one ticket probably qualifies as "soft".

A moment of silence was held before today's New York Sirens vs. Minnesota Frost game in memory of Alex Pretti.

Afterwards you can hear people yell "fuck ICE."

This is from the NYT masthead editorial about the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. The highlighted line invalidates not just the editorial, but the very idea of newspaper editorials crafted by the consensus of a board. Better to publish nothing at all than to publish a line like this.

What has the world come to? But he's 100% right. Preach on Brother Bill. 🥴 We need more elected Democrats to understand this.
Also, may I say that I don’t agree with people saying ICE and CBP need “more training.” They’re doing exactly what this administration has trained them to—impose a reign of fear in blue cities. They don’t need more training. They need to be ripped up root and branch.

This was murder. Pretti did not initiate the confrontation. He didn’t strike them. He didn’t brandish his gun. They tackled him, beat him, disarmed him, and shot him.
Holy crap.

This is the most damning video yet.

It shows Border Patrol agents clearly taking Alex's firearm, running it away, and THEN executed him in cold blood by emptying a clip into his face.

Murder.

Thank you, Sen. Cortez Masto, for casting a principled vote on DHS funding given recent events. I appreciate your support for democracy. At the same time, we need you to go even further. ICE is not fixable, and we need your commitment to abolishing any agency inconsistent with the rule of law.
January 24, 2026 at 10:31 PM
Thank you for standing up for America on this vote, Sen. Rosen. However "guardrails" cannot redeem the irredeemable. ICE cannot be reformed, it must be abolished. We need you to step up and meet the moment.
My personal guiding principle has always been "agree where you can and fight where you must." And I believe this is a time when we must fight back.

Really great thread about what's going on in the Twin Cities.
I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

They just make up bullshit, bad-faith legal theories, do what they want until a court stops them, then lather, rinse, and repeat.

In the meantime, they get to terrorize people. And nothing will happen to any of those responsible.

Our courts are not equipped to deal with this.

Aurora in Las Vegas? Yup. Lots of folks further north will have prettier pictures, I'm sure, but these are cool. Dim aurora show up better in camera, but I'm pretty certain I could (barely) make them out naked eye. I'm astounded at how high they reach in the sky at this latitude.

This is (*checks notes*) after a Federal District Judge ordered them not to use chemical weapons on observers.

ICE is a collection of lawless, cruel, racist thugs. Defund them, and prohibit their non-elected federal employment for the next 20 years.
It's cool that these guys just use pepper spray casually now, against people who are wholly within their rights, without a moment's hesitation. Several shots of them using it as they climb into their cars and drive away, not even a pretense of urgency or need. Just a parting "fuck you" to them.
This is what happened in our neighborhood yesterday. ICE snatched a human being off of our streets, roughed them up badly, and then pepper sprayed legal observers as they documented it all. This is a daily occurrence happening all throughout Minnesota right now.

I finally got around to listening to this one. Nice work by Roberts pushing *hard* at places in this interview. We need all sorts of people pushing in all sorts of directions on the climate front, so I wish Ms. Haq all the luck in the world and hope her organization has every success. But, ... 1/
Today on Volts: Aliya Haq has been in the US climate movement for 20yrs, most recently running Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy initiative. Now she's started a new group, the Clean Economy Project, geared toward supporting clean energy rather than fighting fossil fuels. We dig into the distinction.
