curious to see whether SCOTUS permits Trump's abuse of constitution across lots of issues but rn it looks like trump take legitimacy. @matthewhitt.bsky.social and i are finally...finally forthcoming in AJPS talking at length abt a new era of judicial public opinion.

ah, i remember this piece. imo its aged good. but it is still probably too technical for my undergrads. :(
ntd.bsky.social
but i do love the original because its just simple old-school survey research that is reasonably assessable for undergrads. ofc people will complain "wats the causal identification strategy" and alright yeah well that's for the second edition.

i really wish that someone would write "The Persuadable Voter" second edition. the data are almost...20 years old at this point!...(omg)...it seems like the sort of thing that would go over well. the OG is getting almost too old to teach at this point -- the kids are like lol what is 2004??

we spent a good like 5 or 6 years really obsessed with norms and norm violations when we probably should have devoted resources to understanding the properties and boundaries of support for the rule of law.

Has Trump’s second term posed a greater or lesser threat to the rule of law than you expected? @nytimes.com

Has Trump’s second term posed a greater or lesser threat to the rule of law than you expected?
Circular graph showing over half answered: much more than I expected, about a quarter: more than I expected, about an eighth: similar threat to what I expected, small sliver: much less threat than I expected.

the rule of law is not embedded in a sanitary set of procedural values but in the moral forces that give meaning to the substance of law.

ICE officers stopped a family at gunpoint and smashed the car window on top of the newborn baby. “I was screaming that there was a baby,” cried the mother. “But they didn’t care,” and covered the baby with their bodies, fearing that the glass would hurt him.

Whats sincerely wild is that this sum of money will not dent the underlying economics of input costs soaring while commodities are still shit. Bail them out all you want but the industry is in biblical trouble.

Right wingers say farmers will need a $50B bribe after Trump spent $20B to try to keep Javier Melei afloat after he poached US soybean markets.

www.politico.com/news/2025/10...
Hill Republicans have been quietly working on their own proposal to find additional funding for the farm bailouts, according to four other people with direct knowledge of the matter. Some Republicans estimate they will eventually need to provide $35 billion to $50 billion in aid to farmers hit by Trump’s tariffs.

hugely important distinction. in some ongoing survey work abt CN, we draw distinctions bw descriptive, banal CN (oh, the US is a "christian" nation) and prescriptive CN (lets do theocracy). this default vs. dominant culture dimension is super helpful for thinking thru what pushes people into 2nd bin

whats deeply, darkly ironic is that all that cutting edge technology and pretty bright steel proudly displayed at the annual farm progress show will no longer show up on American farms but conglomerates overseas. walking the streets of Decatur IL this year felt like parading abt the twilight zone.

US farmers are saying they "just need temporary help, until things get better."

Here's the thing. US farm exports- which are mostly soy- CANNOT get better.

Other countries expanded their soy industries to fill China's demand.

We've walled ourselves out of the global market, folks. This is it.
