curious to see whether SCOTUS permits Trump's abuse of constitution across lots of issues but rn it looks like trump take legitimacy. @matthewhitt.bsky.social and i are finally...finally forthcoming in AJPS talking at length abt a new era of judicial public opinion.

In lighter news we put this puzzle together yesterday and it was a good time. Desserts with butts. Weird but fun.

one of the few things ive done academically that i think "actually" matters involves this graph. people who are bad neighbors -- who reject immigrants, people of a different race or religion as neighbors -- want strong (anti-democratic) leaders and army rule.

people who are good neighbors do not.

One little thing you can do if you’re feeling helpless tonight: throw a few bucks to the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota. They’re reportedly stretched thin for obvious reasons and could use some help if you can offer it.

This one is too much. Logging off for the evening. Those words will haunt.
A video of Alex Pretti reading out the final salute of an unnamed veteran he cared for until the end of his life in the ICU, posted to Facebook by his son.

Man this is good.
NEW: this is how the US press would report on this if it was happening in a ‘shithole country’. It’s an execution. But it also reveals how weak Trump really is

Alex Pretti will not be forgotten.
Kare 11 local news just read, in full, this statement from Michael and Susan Pretti, the parents of Alex Pretti.

"Please get the truth out about our son."

Yep. And now, well after Reconstruction’s defeat (let’s say that instead of “failure”) the central state has developed a robust repressive capacity. This time it’s deploying it not to defend multiracial democracy but to defend a very different vision.
There is a straight line from the failure of Reconstruction to "We don't need to count everyone's vote in the 2000 election" to "People from places like Madison & Milwaukee aren't real Wisconsinites & shouldn't have their votes count" to "ICE can murder people in cold blood in our cities."
January 24, 2026 at 11:06 PM
Any news organization that airs DHS / ICE officials yammering about how Alex was a clear and present danger to these jackboot Nazis is a fuckin enemy of democracy.
Holy crap.

This is the most damning video yet.

It shows Border Patrol agents clearly taking Alex's firearm, running it away, and THEN executed him in cold blood by emptying a clip into his face.

Murder.

Great line, & not from one of our so-called leaders but this random guy
The whole interview is worth it

I have now read enough about Alex to be certain that he was filled with a love for the least of these that burned far brighter than the majority of parishioners who will trundle into the church pews tomorrow morning and sing some pablum about love and justice.
Alex Pretti’s dad: “He cared about people deeply & was very upset with what was happening...He thought it was terrible, you know, kidnapping children, just grabbing people off the street. He cared about those people, he knew it was wrong, so he did participate in protests” apnews.com/article/immi...

Walz just doesn’t have the juice. With everything on the line and his legacy to play for he shit the bed.

What an incredible image.
This is courage. Looking a masked, government fascist dead in the eye, face to face, knowing full well that your life is on the line.

If elected officials had 1/10th of Alex Pretti's resolve, we would have far fewer troubles.

Alex Pretti was a colleague at the VA. We hired him to recruit for our trial. He became an ICU nurse- I lover working with him. He was a good kind person who lived to help and these fuckers executed him.

“Donald please stop”

can be replaced by:

“Donald get your fucking goons off my streets I am calling up the National Guard to protect my citizens”

And not doing so is a choice
January 24, 2026 at 6:33 PM
apparently, for all intents and purposes, a state's national guard does not, in point of fact, exist to protect its citizens from the tyranny of the federal government.

The United States in a nutshell
State troopers in riot gear are protecting ICE agents who have long guns. People yelling at the state troopers, “turn around and arrest them! They just killed a Minnesotan!”

I would like Democrats to understand that doing literally anything is not the escalation they think it is. Doing something is DE-ESCALATION. Doing nothing is ESCALATION because it will cause people to take matters into their own hands.
once again i am asking literally anyone in a position of power to do literally anything so that our neighbors stop getting fucking murdered in the street
January 24, 2026 at 4:10 PM
the people yearn for a different statement of righteous anger
I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening.

The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.
January 24, 2026 at 4:28 PM
so were less than a month into 2026 and the christo-fascist regime has now:

1. summarily executed two (2) american citizens in broad daylight on film
2. kidnapped babies to use as bait
3. beaten minors senselessly
4. {host of other impeachable things}

pretty fuckin terrible.
