On the last day of 2025, I tried to sum up in this free piece the big stories of the year. Boil it down, however, and one story surpasses all others, be that for the Russo-Ukraine war or global geopolitics overall.
2025 was the year when the USA changed sides

NEW: Protests in Iran have expanded geographically and demographically since December 28, and many of the recent protests adopted an explicitly anti-regime tone. 🧵(1/5)

This statement is a sick joke. US foreign policy is a sick joke, being implemented by enemies of truth, freedom & democracy - people driven by personal greed & the opportunity to exploit the suffering of others by trading US power and prestige for death & business opportunities.

And this is why Russia is so desperate.
If we just stay in there Russia will collapse.
Russian economic collapse: military plants have also stopped paying workers.

The situation is so bad inside Russia now that even strategic military manufacturers are running out of money, and workers have been unpaid for over 3 months.

A lot is going wrong, all at once.🍿🍿🍿

I read somewhere that the secret key to postwar British history is that in any incident, meeting, whatever, there’s a high chance that most participants are a bit tipsy and someone round the table is absolutely steaming drunk.
Happy 79th anniversary to this diary entry from Evelyn Waugh, in which he drinks enough to make you wonder how he lived for a further 19 years:

The new US National Security Strategy reads better in either the original Russian via which it was dictated or the 1930s vintage German in which it was based. It makes Putin and Stephen Miller the architects of US foreign policy. The big loser? Our allies. The big winner? China.

A presidential memo saying officers carrying out Caribbean boat strikes can’t be prosecuted is a confession the attacks are war crimes.

Virtually every lawyer across the political spectrum identifying them as blatant, unambiguous violations of the laws of armed combat is because they’re war crimes.
On the horrific news that Pete Hegseth ordered the killing of boat bombing survivors, remember: The Trump Murder Memo "authorizing" the strikes preemptively clears those carrying them out. That's unusual. And we still haven't heard from the commander who resigned:

It’s wrong to lump all top Trump people in one category. There are differences among them. But they do seem to fall into three (sometimes overlapping) categories:

• Ordinary criminals (grift and corruption).

• Sex criminals.

• War criminals.
