The word doctor comes from the Latin docēre, meaning “to teach.” It was first used for scholars who earned the highest degrees at universities. Medical doctors came later, once medicine became an academic discipline. Doctorate came first.

I hear you. But in some ways, it's human nature. Most people don't change until discomfort forces them to. But also, the stories we tell about the causes of that discomfort are important too. Hence 2024. So, as many have said, it's economic suffering AND effective messaging.

I think so. Suffering is a significant motivator. But in those 3 cases, it was historic economic suffering. In the early 2000s, I remember what it felt like for gas to go from about $0.75/gallon to nearly $3/gallon. And that was BEFORE 9/11. 2008 = historic housing bubble and 2020 = covid.

Recent history suggests that crisis (particularly economic crisis) grows the electorate. The 2004 Bush v. Kerry election had the highest turnout in U.S. history until Biden's election in 2020. Obama's 2008 win is #3. Severe economic downturns were a key factor in all 3.
