I’m inclined to agree: spending taxpayer money on Lansdowne 2.0 hardly seems like the most pragmatic option, considering so many higher-priority needs like transit, infrastructure upgrades, road and sidewalk maintenance, pedestrian safety upgrades, the list goes on…

We hit the streets to ask Ottawans what they think about Lansdowne 2.0.

On SGEC, the trail is much nicer than the parkway, but it is packed with people walking. I used the parkway to get my bread and beer at Almanac and Dominion City.

This would initially hurt those of us in the suburbs. However, it would further shift the tax burden to the core (higher relative property values) and create incentives for neighbourhoods to evolve and grow up. In the long run, it will make us all wealthier while solving big issues like housing.

Ahead of tonight’s Ottawa Urbanism Book Club, here’s my favourite quote from Strong Towns.

Meeting at 6:15 pm tonight at Sunnyside Public Library. All welcome, reading not required.

“In 2023, cars and their drivers killed 8,820 American pedestrians and bicyclists — 7,314 pedestrians and 1,166 cyclists. They injured another 136,281, an increase of over 5,300 injuries from 2022.”

I could see some side streets with bike lanes overtaking car centric main streets. Assuming that zoning is not a hindrance.

The biggest impediment to improving downtown is insisting on bringing people from the suburbs to offices. It could be a great place for people instead of a place for workers.

Literally one parked car, likely with no one in it, holding up a 60' articulated bus, with maybe as many as 60 times the amount of people on it.

Which should our city prioritize?

strongtownsottawa.ca/bank/ Tell the city to at least try some proper dedicated bus lanes in the Glebe.
orleansfietser.bsky.social
Yes. I think it does a good job of showing how much low densities need infrastructure.
orleansfietser.bsky.social
I wish the city collected data to do a similar map with expenses. The table with line km of roads per house shown by Étienne was great. @strongtownsottawa.ca had awesome delegations this week. #strongtowns

Children deserve independence.

Bike lanes enable it.

Great article Richard, thanks for sharing!

I learned through the media that the Calgary Herald published my op-ed this weekend...

It is about the anti-bike lane push by the governments of Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. I thought the perspective of children was missing from the discussion... 🚲

Opinion: Youth caught in never-ending cycle of bike vs. auto arguments
It is time for our governments to accept the evidence from decades of research on the benefits of cycling as well as impact on traffic.

We need traffic engineers that understand that to get to the tmp targets, drivers will have to occasionally be mildly inconvenienced.

Your choice is the shortest route (lots of red) via Innes vs the safer route (lots of green). The safer one is twice as long. This is why people bike on sidewalks in places sometimes. Your weekly commute would be five hours more. #ottbike

This is exactly why road safety advocates want physically protected wheeling lanes. #roadsafety

I would say above 99th percentile. That's without looking at any data.
