The whole bit about guys who were objectively doing fine but still felt slighted by a world that didn't flatter them enough was depressingly familiar

The story that leave voters/ the leave campaign and reform tell themselves and each other is based on a misunderstanding of British history

1/3 There’s a strong relationship between Reform / far right support and the Brexit Leave constituency. A continuation of the refusal to accept that Britain is poorer and more unequal not due to immigration but because it is no longer subsidised by an Empire. theconversation.com/brexit-how-t...
Brexit: how the end of Britain’s empire led to rising inequality that helped Leave to victory

When we posted this a couple of weeks ago, we had some AI enthusiasts insist that this diagram was the result of poor prompting, or that the prompt that the original poster made was to generate a funny, bad diagram. So we decided to test ChatGPT's capability...

Today in AI Is Not A Good Source For Learning About The World's Most Misunderstood Body Part, meet this ChatGPT gem.

Funnily enough, we're actually going to talk about how most of this is kinda sorta right (for small values of right), as a cautionary tale about generative AI.
Screenshot of a reddit post: ChatGPT asked if I wanted a diagram of what's going on inside my pregnant belly.

A screenshot of ChatGPT's response. It is a side view of a foetus gestating in the uterus. The foetus is head-up with no umbilical cord or placenta. Behind the uterus is the rectum, which is unlabelled. Trailing down from between the rectum and spine, extending beneath the buttocks to the inner thigh is a yellow line labelled "pudendal nerve. At the front is an oval-shaped part labelled "cervix". And then we really struggle to image describe this bit. The uterus and the bladder are both attached to a single part which is long inside, then extends downwards into a penis with a single exist. This penis is labelled "rectum".

Definitely Amazon should bear the blunt of the blame here rather than the format (still think there should be a Bandcamp for ebooks)

Huge thanks to the Irish Independent for covering this, (I've just seen a BBC article about a musician this has happened to). For readers, the solution is to buy real books in independent bookshops, a win win for everyone and a lose for the scammers. If you prefer ebooks, be very careful out there 🤯
Feature article in the Irish Independent - also available online - about AI generated books being sold in my name. Screen shot of the opening of the Irish Independent article about AI generated books being sold with my name on the cover.

can't agree more.
more print, local print, traditional publishers, self-made, all of it.

Counterpoint: There is has never been a more urgent time to write a book. Technofascism is, among other things, an attempt to capture and enclose literature and literacy. Print is a rent strike.
katewagner.wehwalt.net
is there anything more pointless right now that writing a book? feels that way to me

I stand corrected- guess i should have done some googling first! In this case absolutely should be required
ourstories.bsky.social
Huh… well today I learned and i retract my previous comment

We absolutely should be doing this!

I’m not sure that the logistics would make it possible. A transmitter on every street broadcasting the speed limit so the cars can pick it up? Or a limiter linked to gps? Plausible but tricky and with many possible failure points

If we’re talking limiting cars to the max in the country absolutely!

A great example of how stories can change in the telling, how misinformation spreads and careless or malicious reporting can make it even worse.

A tall woman who was perceived as trans asks a customer in the middle of a shop if they needed help, and this got twisted into a very different story
brokenbottleboy.bsky.social
On how a story mutates as it spreads across the British media…

The Telegraph's M&S trans shop assistant tall tale turned into a malicious game of telephone...

On a related note do you have any recommendations for a “studying history/historiography for dummies” type text?
