To no surprise, Final Fantasy VII
Asked for a PlayStation for Christmas just for it (Though ended up not being the first game I'd pop in). While I was too young to get a lot of the nuances of its story, I could tell that it was unlike any other game I'd played.

First Final Fantasy-
Final Fantasy 1990
I had previously played Dragon Warrior (DQ 1 localized) and I preferred seeing the sprites fight in FF and was hooked.
I was young but loved the grind, didn’t synthesize the story at all.
