On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.
On Nov. 16, a mental health counselor recorded in Kamilla’s medical records that her mother reported the girl had lost her appetite after being “served food that contained worms.” A week later, the couple said, children were told to gather in the gym for what they believed would be a Thanksgiving celebration. Excitement spread as families saw tables set with turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, they said. The children waited expectantly. But when a parent asked when the celebration would begin, Oksana said, staff told them the holiday meal was for employees, not detainees. The children, she said, watched despondently as the feast was packed away.

I was commissioned to do a short comic about Stella's new friend. Who is this new friend?... don't worry about it.
Stella (demigod dog girl) and Zandee (demigod dog girl in denial) walk through a snow-covered field full of standing stones. Zandee: [sigh] Stella, Do we really have to do this training? Stella: Of course, otherwise you’ll never learn your true strength. Zandee holds themself and looks at the ground embarrassed, while Stella tosses a watermelon-sized stone from one hand to the other. Zandee: Whatever I might look like right now, I’m NOT a demigod. I know I don’t have anything like your strength. Stella: Yeah, yeah, we’ll see– Zandee is surprised to see the rock Stella was tossing come hurdling towards the back of their head. Stella: THINK FAST! SFX: KA-POW Zandee has been knocked on to their butt, they’re holding the stone that nearly killed them over their head as they yell at Stella. Stella points back at them triumphantly. Zandee: What the @#%*!? Were you trying to kill me!? Stella: Ha! Like I could kill you with a puny pebble like that. Zandee holds the rock with one arm, amazed at how light it is. Zandee: Hey, you’re right. This thing is totally light. Zandee yells at Stella for trying to trick them, but Stella confidently denies any trickery. Zandee: HEY! You’re not tricking me with a rock that looks heavy but isn’t, are you!? Stella: If you don’t believe me, how about you hand it to Harold. Harold (perfectly mortal dog boy) struggles to hold up the stone with both hands. Zandee is astonished by their own apparent strength. Stella is delighted to get more boulder lifting underway. Harold: I-it’s pretty heavy. Zandee: For real? I’ve never been strong before. Stella: Now, let’s see how much you can really do. Zandee lifts a beachball-sized boulder on one shoulder. Stella gives a thumbs-up of approval. Stella: Great start. Zandee lifts a two-foot-wide boulder up to their chest. Stella and Hope (a girl with silhouette black fur) look on impressed. Hope: Oh my! Zandee lifts a four-foot-wide boulder straight over their head. Stella, Harold, and Hope clap with delight. Zandee: HA! THIS IS AWESOME! Zandee carelessly tosses away the last boulder they were carrying as they look for something bigger. Stella narrowly catches it before it can harm Harold or Hope. Stella: Okay, that’s enough for now. Let’s take a break. Zandee: Nah, that was just a start. I’m ready for a really big one. Zandee starts to lift a boulder that’s bigger than a truck. The rest look on with worry. Stella: I really don’t know about this Zandee. That’s a big one ever for me. Zandee: Now way [urk] I– [grunt] Got this. Zandee confidently lifts the huge boulder over their head. Stella and the rest stand back at a great distance. Stella: Okay, we’re all very impressed. You can put it down now. Zandee: Are you kidding? Zandee cackles, made with power. Zandee: This is amazing! This strength. This power. The ice begins to crack under Zandee’s feet. Zandee: I am a go–! SFX: C-CRACK Zandee falls through the ice, the boulder covering them perfectly. Stella: [sigh] I knew something like this would happen. SFX: FLUP Caption: The end.
