In any case, don't treat disabled people like children unless they are literally a child, but also, are you treating children as small still learning people? Or as lesser?

This part. As I was reading your thread, foremost in my mind was how disrespectful our country is to children and how costly that is to all of us. We deprive them of nurturing and deprive ourselves of their wisdom, among other things.

And this issue is going to get worse as providers have their funding cut. In IN, the way autism is diagnosed by Medicaid is going through a major change. Speech therapists, occupational therapists, neurologists, psychiatrists, they’ll all be impacted. The autistic community doesn’t serve this. /end

I coparent with a parent who refuses to learn any form of alternative communication to help a teenager learn to communicate. And before I hear “go to court”, we’ve been there for over a decade. We're learning so much more about the experiences of nonverbal autistic people now, too, thanks to increasing awareness and assistive technology, and what really stood out to me was how much their intelligence, experiences, and suffering have been unheard and dismissed in favor of the parents' POV.

Yeah when I saw the nonspeaking people expressing themselves with assistive tech in "The Reason I Jump" I was horrified to realize how wrong my assumptions about them were. Like, a guy who couldn't speak or handwrite was using assistive tech to write cogent newspaper articles.

I remember encountering a nonverbal autistic woman on Tumblr who, despite having enormous difficulty processing spoken language and other living challenges, was not only literate but would review recently published articles about autism in medical journals for fun.

1) This has been in the German press today also. The policeman hit the woman twice in the face and when she was apprehended by more police, they twisted and broke her arm, it needed to be operated (see video).

1) Irish ambassador to Germany has conveyed her concern to German authorities over police violence against Kitty O'Brien.

2) Aside from being hit in the face, police also broke O'Briens arm, forcing them to undergo surgery.
