I've moved here from X, where I had the same username and liked to discuss books, movies, ephemera, 1970s nostalgia, folklore, folk horror and, when their bullpen wasn't melting down, the Phillies. Hope to eventually find all those great people from X here.

Not awful given that IMAX is now out of the equation and many theaters have reduced it to showing on one screen.

His max throwing distance being around 8 feet could be problematic. Also, patting the umps on the head could lead to multiple ejections.

I agree that some folks are oblivious to the daily news, but: (1) Rowling has been one of the highest-profile fights for years, including the falling out with the original movie cast; (2) don't actors have advisers who might clue them in to some of these considerations?

It's not the flashy Jack Fisk-style production design that gets Oscar attention, but Florencia Martin did an incredible job. "Lived in" is spot on.

I'm thinking of how messy and lived in all the spaces where characters like Bob and Sensei live in against the arid staging a McMansion for Zillow quality of the CAC headquarters and the empty particle board cube they show Lockjaw, who nearly swoons with ecstasy over it at that.

OBAA rewards a repeat viewing, it's chaotic, free wheeling qualities reveal the larger whole that any story about America, about activism, about families is going to be messy.

He does seem to be the most fleshed-out character in the movie but I'm not at a place of having sympathy for him. I suppose -- and it's not this movie -- there's an imagined backstory of the environment in which he was raised that led him to be like that. But ultimately he made his evil choices.

after you come out of One Battle After Another and think to yourself that the idea of an ‘Christmas adventurers club’ is absurd and cartoonish, read the below and remind yourself that it’s not just likely but almost certain that orgs like that exist and are steering industry and government.

Exclusive: Tech billionaire Peter Thiel warned that Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and critics of AI are “legionnaires of the Antichrist” in private lectures that connected government oversight of Silicon Valley to an apocalyptic future.
Inside billionaire Peter Thiel’s private lectures: Warnings of ‘the Antichrist’ and U.S. destruction
In leaked recordings of private lectures by tech billionaire Peter Thiel he argued that “the Antichrist” is likely to take the form of a critic of technology.

It hurts because, holy hell, the rest of the playoff field is so beatable.

As I said elsewhere, I think you wait 3 weeks and see how the playoffs unfold. If the Dodgers curb-stomp their next two opponents and win the title, it's clear the Phillies were their biggest threat and the #2 team in MLB. If someone figures out a way to topple LA, then the Phillies' loss worse.

I lean toward the Phillies needing a managerial change BUT I think they should wait 3 weeks. If the Dodgers absolutely steamroll their next two opponents (very likely) the Phillies are clearly the second best team in baseball. The optics of firing him after a bad-luck first-round matchup not great.

I find it bleak that ChatGPT now has more users than Wikipedia. Many people would rather be spoon-fed information by a machine than read and research for themselves. Tech isn't just making us dumber. Worse than that: it's killing curiosity itself and the desire to learn.

Well if you just want homers and whiffs, Eugenio Suarez will probably cost a third of what he costs.

Fans would hate the unsexiness of it, but I think you have to consider Dave Martinez, whose only shot so far was with a Nationals team that was injured and divested of talent.

I am a little nervous at those 180-strikeout seasons in the 140-game Japanese season. Is he walking a lot due to a good eye or teams not challenging him in key moments? I think there's some bust potential here.

World Series winning managers since 2012:
Bruce Bochy - 3
Dave Roberts - 2
John Farrell - 1
Ned Yost - 1
Joe Maddon - 1
AJ Hinch - 1
Alex Cora - 1
Dave Martinez - 1
Brian Snitker - 1
Dusty Baker - 1

I simultaneously think Thomson should go AND that managers are at their lowest point of making any difference whatsoever in MLB history. Roberts is two series from his third ring and a ticket to Cooperstown and think is indisputably a bottom-tier in-game manager.

Intriguing, but OTOH if this guys strikes out 180 times a season in Japan .... well, woof.
papergreat.bsky.social
So now you're at the point where the new manager can't change his pitching OR hitting coach? It's already a dealbreaker if any new manager wants to move on from Cotham. But I don't know if you can force the skipper to keep the hitting coach too
papergreat.bsky.social
I'd almost rather move on from Schwarber than Realmuto. They could use the payroll flexibility, the positional flexibilty (putting sore guys there), and it might shake them out of a lineup that too often seems to be waiting around for Schwarber to get to the plate.

Best-case scenario for that outfield is probably a combined 40 home runs. If you do that, switch your other dollars from Ranger Suarez to Eugenio Suarez and get power at 3B.

Taylor Ward, who hits well from both sides, but especially crushes lefties, remains a great fit for Phillies offense as a LF. Ward and Bohm are both entering last year of their contracts in 2026. What could Phillies add to Bohm in a package to convince Angels to trade them Ward?
papergreat.bsky.social
Is there any reason Marsh couldn't play RF?
Might open up more possibilities if Phillies can purse a slugger for LF.

I will definitely be intrigued on how they use Kemp next year. The ceiling is low, but I think he can be a contributor. They just shouldn't depend on him for a fair-sized role without a contingency, like they did with Wilson
