Ich werde seine Verblüffung nicht vergessen. »Wer sollte Ihre Bücher verbieten?« sagte er damals, 1933, noch ganz erstaunt. »Sie haben doch nie ein Wort gegen Deutschland geschrieben oder sich in Politik eingemengt.« Man sieht: all die Ungeheuerlichkeiten, wie Bücherverbrennungen und Schandpfahlfeste, die wenige Monate später schon Fakten sein sollten, waren einen Monat nach Hitlers Machtergreifung selbst für weitdenkende Leute noch jenseits aller Faßbarkeit. Denn der Nationalsozialismus in seiner skrupellosen Täuschertechnik hütete sich, die ganze Radikalität seiner Ziele zu zeigen, ehe man die Welt abgehärtet hatte.
