Learned that an anonymous outside expert on submersibles did an interview with the OceanGate Titan investigation, and they released a transcript, with all the names redacted. The first line of his first answer? "I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic."

set down the path to make that film, the first thing that I did

was arrange to be introduced to the head of the submersible

program at the P.P. Shirshov Institute in Moscow, a guy named

I. I did that through a mutual friend

of ours, a guy named
, who is one of the preeminent
underwater cinematographers in the world. And had been on a

submersible expedition out to Titanic the previous year with the
21
Russians. And that was organized by a Canadian company that was
22 doing an IMAX film which was released under the title Titanica.

There is a lot of history of international cooperation between space programs; my favorite piece of material culture from those is the Apollo-Soyuz test project patch, which featured Snoopy (NASA's unoffical mascot) and the Russian bear. #TheMartian #HATM

Leather Goddesses From Phobos is a real game from 1986, designed by Steve Meretzky, notable for including both a choice of player gender (with attendant plot shifts), and a "naughtiness" setting ranging from "tame" to "lewd." It is fun, if more as an artifact. #TheMartian #HATM

Just remember: we had to get through the Bell Riots and Eugenics Wars (among other horrors) to even get to the first inklings of the Federation. It's not likely in our lifetimes, but we can build a world where it is. #TheMartian #HATM

Oh man, I saw Mission to Mars on opening weekend with my sister (she was a HUGE Gary Sinise fan). I remember reading up on colonizing Mars from the Don Cheadle living in a greenhouse sideplot, and considering whether I could make a go of that (Mark's conditions seem much nicer). #TheMartian #HATM

To my mind, Matt Damon should have won the Best Actor Oscar for 2015, over Leonardo DiCaprio trying too hard in a perfectly dull Revenant. Damon doesn't get to play off anyone, has limited spaces and bulky costuming, and still manages to make this engaging and endearing. #TheMartian #HATM
