Someone told me today it looks like I'm dressed for a Christmas party, and I'm like, no, I'm just dressed for Friday???

Morning immediately ruined by a colleague policing my choice of breakfast foods. Got forbid a woman be fat and want to eat a muffin in peace.

On the train, glorious autumn sunshine making everything gold, listening to Springsteen, drinking coffee. It occurs to me that perhaps everything is not as terrible as my brain wants to convince me it is.

Springsteen. The River is one of the saddest, and yet probably hugely common, stories ever written, imo

I also need to know: I am fairly middle-of-the-road on Taylor Swift but someone I know called her the Greatest Living Lyricist. She is not.

Who is yours? Either the greatest or your favorite?

My brain immediately startijg singing "Applerazzi" to the tune of Lady Gaga's Paparazzi.

This is really good. And this bit made me laugh out loud "...she “ecountered members of the Kinkster Society”, but it can also be taken to imply some kind of piratical band of perverts trying to press gang passing innocents into their world of depravity."

Brb, joining a piratical band of perverts.

NEW | On the latest story about students (and sex):

THE KINK IN THE TIMES’ POSITION ON UNIVERSITIES AND FREE SPEECH

Why is a national newspaper obsessing about student societies and quoting extreme pressure groups? I think we all know the answer...

It was this, from The Midnight Meat Train by Clive Barker. I have not been able to stop thinking about it.
A close up photograph of an excerpt from The Midnight Meat Train, from The Books of Blood by Clive Barker. It reads:

"New York was just a city.

He had seen her wake in the morning like a slut, and pick murdered men from between her teeth, and suicides from the tangles of her hair. He had seen her late at night, her dirty back streets shamelessly courting depravity. He had watched her in the hot afternoon, sluggish and ugly, indifferent to the atrocities that were being committed every hour in her throttled passages.

It was no Palace of Delights.

It bred death, not pleasure."

Do you ever read something so good that it makes you just want to stop writing because what's the point?

Both seasons of Interview with the Vampire are on Netflix. One of the best literary adaptations in the history of television, it takes all the source material's strengths and transmogrifies all its weaknesses, like The Terror. Cruel, disgusting, sexy as fuck. Plus: Eric Bogosian! Do not walk, RUN.

Making people make concerned faces on the train
A woman with ginger hair and octagonal glasses wearing a white shirt over a black vest. She has large black headphones on and is holding up a copy of Clive Barker's Books of Blood Vols 1-3 up to the camera.

Bio Hazard Cleaning

The o of Bio has partially rubbed off, so it looks like it says "Bi Hazard Cleaning"

If nothing else this has really spurred me to finish my short story about Catholic vampires who are taking transubstantion a little too seriously.
pirateshipdream.bsky.social
Also, no religion, as if the pomp and circumstance and general arch Gothic weirdness of Catholicism aren't intrinsically tied to so much of the genre

My favourite bit was "no epistolary stories", despite two of the founding works of the genre being epistolary. Except they didn't know the word epistolary.
