Holy shit, I made the grave error of joining r/rpg and suggesting that GMs don't have an inherent authority to dictate demands of their group outside of the game, and I got bickered with and downvoted to hell.

So, you know, unjoined from that cess pit. I can see why people mock Reddit so much

That's the plan of anyone who's not a do-nothing idiot.

Every single employee even remotely related to any of it must face consequences by whoever is in power next and literally no one should have any support for any political office who doesn't intend to do just that.
Maybe instead of identifying specific ICE agents who do particularly heinous things, we could just penalize everyone who was on payroll at the agency starting by a certain date.

Peter Molyneux obviously had serious issues with the way he talked about his games vs what he delivered, but he was still the visionary behind Fable 1-3 and I find it very hard to feel even a little optimistic about Fable 4 being developed without Lionhead having any hand in it.

Every time I say that D&D is not a game that's easy to learn, I get pushback from people who've only tried D&D, Pathfinder, and Shadowrun.

It's solidly medium crunch.

There are much better games to use as an intro and I think, if D&D weren't the gateway to the hobby, we'd have more people.
I'm not usually one for "5e is the worst thing ever", but today I facilitated a D&D club for 12-13y/o...

It really hit me how counterintuitive and confusing it is compared to nearly everything else I've ever played. The kids had no clue what was going on

I've been saying the same for ages. D&D is a pretty bad game to use as an introduction to the hobby because it's relatively obtuse, especially for new GMs.

More than once I look wistfully over to board gamers who understand that you induct a newbie with Ticket to Ride, not Too Many Bones.

do you remember when steve jackson games revoked the GURPS license from the original fallout because of the intro cutscene showing american troops shooting a kneeling man in the back of his head because mr jackson insisted american troops would never do such a thing?

Do people still not understand BlueSky feeds? This is a solved problem.
some people are not going to like to hear this but if we do want esp more younger people to get off platforms controlled by right wing billionaires and onto alternative ones then we do need to figure out how to make a space that isn't the exclusively no fun all politics scold zone like bluesky

I don't have nostalgia for D&D never having owned it when I ws young, so I don't convince myself Gary Gygax was some icon of brilliance and "combat" is somehow a deep and integral part of the human experience and the only one deserving of detailed mechanics.

The term 'OSR' is genuinely the most useless term in the field. I'm shocked people still use it to describe themselves or their games.
Another thing that annoys me about the OSR is how few of them can distinguish between designing a game and playing a game - I was accused of “telling people they’re having fun wrong” when I say I hate the OSR and think it’s a bad design philosophy, buddy people enjoy og VTM

"System doesn't matter" is the D&D version of saying:

I love using Papyrus for my legal documents, the font on my phone, the font on the window of the bakery I work at, and it's just as good as any other font because it's fun for me

I've seen a few people mention Daniel Fox as problematic recently and.... that's it?

I assumed there was something, you know, real. Like some actual marginalizing behavior, abusing actual systemic power over someone.
TtRPG and D&D fam, be aware that Daniel D. Fox is on Bluesky.

I’m sure there’s some culture effect here too, but purely in terms of cognitive biases, this actually makes so much sense

There’s already such a strong normalization of obscuring one’s face that the severe cogn. biases causing most people to stop believing in safety and health wouldn’t fit here

I'm sorry, how has no one yet made a Sims licensed TTRPG that uses d8's so they can be rolling these

Crunchy economics. Seems like most games now just abstracts economics away entirely so as to not deal with it, either from a play perspective, a design perspective, or both

But I think a lot is missing by having everything be either narrative or a single die roll in the moment
Hey #ttrpgCommunity!

What's a mechanic from an older #ttrpg (pre-2000s) that you wish modern games would bring back?

THAC0 need not apply. 😄

The problem with this entire thread is that everyone I've ever seen insist that the "system doesn't matter" always means "I use Papyrus for everything, even court documents and hospital paperwork". It's almost exclusively a stand-in for "D&D can work for anything"
In most communication, we understand "doesn't matter" is contextual and not absolute. If the teacher says "It doesn't matter what font you use", and one kid takes that as an excuse to use Wingdings, we all know the kid is being a smartass.

Also, that kid is us.
