I’m Stephen Robinson. Years ago, my son once described me to his pre-school teacher as a “play typer guy,” which is the name of my Substack newsletter, where I write about art and politics, and my podcast, where I interview fun people.

she was good at whipping votes, but for what? she slowed every investigation, actively campaigned against accountability, and very publicly believed that the way to beat Trump was to avoid backlash caused by direct opposition and instead focus on kitchen-table issues to win elections

That sense really is pervasive - that many Dems are annoyed they have the responsibility of dealing with this moment, and wish they let someone else handle it while keeping the job. And it comes through every time they dismiss the fury and passion of their own base as an irritation.
Yes the spirit is missing, but first the vision and desire is missing. Lincoln wanted the job because he recognized the moment and wanted the responsibility.

Dem leaders feel owed the position and are offended responsibility should be forced upon them.

DHS didn't leak the video because they believe an honest look at the evidence shows the ICE officer under deadly threat.

It's because they believe supporters will go "yeah, he showed that fucking bitch," media will go "controversy, who's to say," and muddying the waters gets normies to check out.

And let Ross have his due process! Maybe he can explain why he called her a fucking bitch and let a jury decide if he’s an innocent public servant or a sick fuck who should never walk free again.

yes, they have a vast propaganda network at their disposal

no, the propaganda they are creating is not very effective at convincing anyone who isn’t already part of their bubble, because they think they’ve already won - it’s just self-congratulatory garbage aimed at their most extreme members

The truth is in the middle. But the reason we can’t get to that happy medium is because of the left.
The reactionary centrist logic is simple: if the left does something bad it’s the left’s fault, and if the right does something bad, it’s also the left’s fault for making them do it. It’s a simple formula and once you see it every one of their arguments is the same

I got a fast food burger for lunch and had to knock to be let in - and while I’m sitting there a giant ICE convoy of masked men roll by, while a bunch of Latino kitchen workers rush to the windows to watch in alarm.

In case you didn't know (I did not), that's Tom Emmer, the
Majority Whip of the United States House of Representatives.

From Minnesota.

Jefferson Davis who famously was protective of people from Africa.
Emmer: "You got Tim Walz literally sounding like Jefferson Davis. Our governor is saying we're at war with the federal government. He claims he can call the National Guard up. They want to tell people to protest, but what they're literally doing is encouraging more violence."

Adding further context: One of the NYPD cops who killed Amadou Diallo wept on the stand when recalling how he tried to render aid to the dying man. “I just held his hands and rubbed his face and said, 'Please don't die. '”

Jonathan Ross called Renee Good a "fucking bitch."
In case there’s any doubt about what TCW means here, his subsequent retweet of David French makes it clear

I personally view Jonathan Ross with the same level of humanity I extend to anyone who shoots an unarmed mother in the face and calls her a fucking bitch. It's not comparable to people who have slandered a dead woman or tried to justify her murder.

If Biden had suspended federal funding to Texas, Florida, or Georgia after Republicans had passed anti-abortion, anti-queer, or voter suppression bills, he would've been impeached -- yes, by a Democratic controlled Congress.

Eventually Democrats need to realize that war has been declared.
at some point we're gonna have to have a real conversation about why we're still paying federal taxes to a regime that isn't using them to help anyone, but instead is using them to brutalize us

@playtyperguy.com and I have discussed this a lot, actually!

You have to bring new ideas in because yours aren’t winning, and they can’t be the bad guys’ ideas because then you are the bad guys. And you have to stop your people from insisting they should cooperate with the bad guys or become just like them, because not being bad guys is your whole brand.

Here’s another on top of Stephen’s excellent image. Imagine a rival company kept beating you in the market by being unscrupulous, and regulators don’t care. What means do you have to beat them AND avoid becoming equally bad?

Innovation and accountability. Yelling at the bad guys does nothing.
You need to convince your friend/loved one to accept that they're in a toxic relationship and leave. Bashing Republicans 24/7 doesn't actually keep Klobuchar and other Dems from voting for Trump's nominees, offering unanimous consent, or going on Fox News (state propaganda).
