Canada made weird tv shows because it was all being done with government funded art grant money so they fell in this wacky middle ground between “shoestring budget” and “no expectation to generate shareholder value” which is really the best way to make art

I spent all afternoon believing I had run the dishwasher right after lunch, but friends, that was a lie.

people always stereotype Canadians as being polite, and its not true at all. We are passive-agressive weirdos who live in isolated weird places and the sooner we make peace with that the better

At my guitar lesson yesterday, I got to play a song with tube amp vibrato and that is 100% a sound that I would leave my spouse for

At the open mic last night, I was chatting with another performer about how his songs had a lovely Gordon Lightfoot feel. He said, "A lot of people tell me that, but honestly, I don't listen to a lot of Lightfoot." I said, "I think, living in Canada, you just end up getting him through osmosis."

What a lovely treat this morning to have Stone Circle replay my experiment with an acrostic poem, in which I dare to talk back to Maggie Nelson!

Some people are very good at writing sex and some people are good at believing that they are good at writing sex, the first is a tremendously impressive skill and the second is what makes for deeply uncomfortable author presentations at science fiction conventions
There's nothing wrong with literary porn, but some of the crap those guys wrote was "Have you actuallly ever HAD sex?"

Blanked out on the second half of my second verse of my new song, as one does. This room forgives. 💖
Today has very much taken me for a ride, so of course it's the perfect evening to go to the open mic and give a new song its first performance

My main income is the salary I earn as a manager in a provincial health authority. I get infrequent royalties for my books (minus ~$200 CAD total on my last statements, meaning I’ll need to pay back from future sales). Advances tend to be about $1k CAD with my current publisher, paid in 2 chunks.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

Friend: Have you had any songs written about you?

Me: Just one. Sort of. But, I think, deep down, in my heart of hearts, I've always believed that more people *should* write songs about me

I have never in my life known what the hell I'm doing now, what I will do next, or where I'm being taken. So, no, I don't know what we're having for supper, but I know it will be food.

I once said this to a teacher friend when he dropped something in front of his Gr. 2/3 class. He immediately had the kids stand up to see if they could feel it, and then, without warning, he fell to his knees and lay all the way down on the floor.
It's not your fault that gravity is extra strong today. You are doing your best!
