He will without any exaggeration destroy America, reduce this country to a lawless mafia state, start a civil war, start a world war, kill us all, or all at once.

And the biggest obstacle to preventing this remains not his objective strength but that OUR LEADERS WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE THREAT.

My political take on this is that the author is a Democrat and suffers from something I’ve noticed in popular history writing, which is a form of reasoning that focuses on the mistakes on “our side” and assumes that whatever “their side” does is pre-ordained. It’s a sort of fundamental attribution error by which our decisions and mistakes are based on context and circumstance, whereas theirs are based on their unchangeable character. That’s the soft bigotry of low expectations: setting the bar so low that being mostly “not crazy” is enough. We should be holding the government to a higher standard than that!

The likelihood you've been right about the course of American politics over the last decade rises in direct proportion to how often you listen to Rage Against the Machine. Having studied political science hurts you a bit. Having worked as a political journalist hurts a lot.

Not the first time I've said it, but I do think we should sit with the fact that the folks likeliest to have predicted we'd elect a reality TV president who'd create a fascist police state where people would be put into unmarked vans for criticizing Israel have been widely ridiculed my entire life.
