Thanks to all who attended our vigil for Lucas Garcia and Violet Barracks yesterday. It is heartbreaking to have multiple fatalities at the same intersection, but unsurprising with a slip lane and no pedestrian signal.

Why: Lucas Garcia was killed by a school bus driver on the morning of Oct. 2, 2025 while crossing the street. He was 38 years old and leaves behind a family and a community in mourning. Join us as we remember Lucas with family and those who knew and loved Lucas whose worlds are now shattered, and call for meaningful change to prevent another tragedy like this from happening. Lucas is the second person to die at this corner in the last three years, following Violet Barracks, age 76, who was killed by a driver in May 2022.

Absolutely heartbreaking and maddening that a pedestrian was killed here just three years ago and nothing has changed.

How much bloodshed has to happen before things change here? The Safe Streets for All project for this area cannot happen fast enough!

My intern tries to arrive to the store between 10am-11am. He texted me in a panic bc his bus still hadn't arrived as of 1059am. He didn't get to us until ~1pm. He spent more time waiting in the rain than at work. #McKeeStrandedMe

🚌❌Today Rhode Island wakes up to a grim new reality. RIPTA buses across the state are no longer running due to @govdanmckee.bsky.social’s sweeping service changes that eliminate weekend service on many routes, reduce frequency all week long, and cripple RIPTA’s ability to provide reliable service.
