Thread — How rage-bait discourse traps you, and how to beat it

A strange thing happened in 21st-century online culture.

Debate stopped being about persuasion, and became a kind of public blood sport.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

As Bluesky grows in popularity, so does the industry of spam-for-hire services attempting to exploit it. Google searches for the query "buy bluesky followers" abound with numerous examples of strangely similar websites peddling bogus Bluesky followers, reposts, and likes.

This is the real reason AI is being shoved down our throats.
Two independent studies found that AI chatbots were better at persuading voters than political ads. The most persuasive bots also lied the most. This is something that humans working in psyops have known for decades. AI is psyops at scale. www.technologyreview.com/2025/12/04/1...

The first school to market itself as AI free is going to corner the market on people interested in actually learning. And I would not be surprised if rich families and the children of people creating this tech were the first movers.
My employer, Dartmouth College, today boasts it's 1st Ivy "to launch AI at an institutional scale." It is doing this by partnering--"more than a collaboration"--with Anthropic, a company that stole the books of many faculty, me included, which many of us are suing.

Today, there is a person in Lincoln, NE that has had COVID for at least 4.5 years (probably in their GI tract) that almost certainly does not know they are infected.

We see the lineage every week. It would be easy to track them, at least from a technical perspective.

It’s going to be so satisfying to see all of these nonsense additions of his name removed. I hope some of the removals happen while he’s alive but if not, he’ll be dead soon enough.
Why is Donald Trump’s name now on the @usip.org building? Who put there? And when?

Almost everyone I know acts as thought frequent jet travel is a human right. It is not.

Frequent flying is one of the most climate-wrecking things individuals do. Emissions from fossil fuel burning jet travel are permanent damage to the planet we depend on to live.

The reason the top 10% of income earners pay more than half of all tax revenue is NOT because they are taxed more than ever.

Their tax rate has been cut FIVE times in the last 25 years.

They are paying more because their INCOME has increased astronomically, where the income of the bottom half has
