just watched a dozen people ask microsoft copilot experts their most pressing questions and those questions were 90% “how do i turn it off?” and “when i turn it off, is it really off or is it spying on me?”

It's been awhile since I spent time with Catholic Social Teaching but it always has resonated with me.

He's right, the American desire to separate ourselves from the poor and live in insulated bubbles is directly opposed to being a Good Person.

Pope Leo XIV has blasted how wealthy people live in a “bubble of comfort and luxury” while the poor suffer. In his first teaching document Thursday, Leo confirms that he is in perfect lockstep with Pope Francis on matters of social injustice.

yah I gotta think on this a lot more, esp since the professional society I lead is about to start working on a generative AI policy, for a wide variety of programs within the society

I cannot stop thinking about your blogpost

its freaked me out

and really makes me wonder, how do we train scientists to be able to do the checking that you did, to make sure that the thing did what you wanted it to do, without them ever having to do it themselves?

When we hear about a lone scientist who made groundbreaking discoveries on their own, it’s usually erasing the truth that science is a team sport, and field research builds on the local knowledge and expertise of the people that live there (8/10)

As a primatologist, Jane Goodall was a huge inspiration to me. I admired the way she describes chimpanzee behavior with such detail and empathy, and she’s inspired so many people and advocated for chimpanzee conservation and welfare.

However, I'm dismayed at what her narrative leaves out (1/10)

A disturbingly easy way to get yelled at is to say that women should be in the paid workforce.

It’s time for the fly party with my fly friends! #CSHLDros
A cartoon from smbc captioned “the life of a scientist sounds way more fun if you describe it like you’re a 6 year old.” The scientist in the cartoon is wearing glasses and a teal polo. Their speech bubble says “I like flies and me and my friends look at flies all the time and sometimes the flies are neat and we tell our other friends about it and our friends also like flies and sometimes we have fly parties and so no we know a lot about flies.” The original cartoon said rocks, Annika photoshopped in flies.

Millipede fans rejoice: we published our revision of Apheloria! This is the most common cherry millipede genus, but its taxonomy has been riddled with nebulous subspecies names. No longer! We clarify species limits and provide a distribution map. mapress.com/zt/article/v... @apheloria.bsky.social

Thinking about all of my US colleagues today that work for USGS, USFWS, US Parks Service, NOAA and the EPA. From front line environmental practitioners to scientists and policy makers, these folks ensure that waters are swimmable, fish are edible, that natural areas are accessible, etc, etc, etc.

I have the privilege of working with fed agency folks. They've been jerked around, forced to move, had offices taken, lost resources, put on leave, fired, re-hired, *shot at*, and now furloughed. Still they return each day to help make America a bit more informed, healthier, and safer.

I love the way science used to be written. Is it necessary to know that the author was pushing his baby in a pram while making observations of insects? Perhaps not, but it provides delightful context, while assuming the reader is familiar with his previously published baby-wheeling-related work.
A screenshot of some text of a paper, with the following sentence highlighted: "One July evening last summer, while engaged in wheeling the baby (another one this time) through some tall grass in the corner of my yard, I noticed..." It continues "an Ammophila attached to a grass-stem in the peculiar..."

imagine telling taylor goddamn swift, with a straight face, that she should perform for free because the exposure is valuable

Apparently the NFL wanted her show for free, and thought the value of it for her was the exposure. The NFL has been getting free exposure from Taylor, just from her going to her fiancés games, and she is getting death threats for it.

New: There was an "emergency" all-hands meeting inside part of NOAA today basically to tell people they have no idea what to expect re a potential shutdown. "Even less than usual," per one source. There is no guidance yet available and no info on what specifically the OMB memo means. So that's cool.
