Certain internet media criticism circles have developed shared a delusion that artistic quality is an objective standard that can be determined empirically. This is the inevitable result.

disclaimer, enjoy or hate your movies as you see fit. But don't be surprised if your ignorance gets called out since too many people confuse "objectivity" with "critical" and "critical" with "hatred."

Me whenever someone uses the phrases:

-Objectively bad
-made to sell toys
-no main character
-no stakes
-force is bacteria
-CGI bad, only practical

when referring to a SW film they personally they didn't like but act like their opinion makes them morally and genetically superior to those who do

There’s just something truly magical about the design of this ship. Whatever way you look at it, from whatever angle, it always looks slick, sharp, beautiful. It intuitively FEELS like a spaceship from the future…

it's not even *just* evil. it's also promising a kind of technological immortality that is actually impossible with the technology they're using. even if this kid somehow has not gotten bored with talking to a shitty chatbot made from a 3 minute video call with his grandmother in multiple decades...
For real, check this out. Evil.

People sometimes accuse me of “making the prequels my whole personality” but you have to understand, I like them and it’s unbelievably frustrating seeing people claim they’re “objectively bad” all the time. Feels like I’m defending my right to enjoy a movie!

Just let me have this one thing please?🙏

ART IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE WORLD

“Wouldn’t it be messed up if the world was taken over by a hive mind?” is nowhere near as groundbreaking as some people are making it out to be.

Still… it’s fine. It’s solid, classic, reliable, comfort-watch, b-movie sci-fi.

I won’t be watching any more of it. Sorry Vince, not for me.

The problem with The Phantom Menace is that I don’t have object permanence. If I don’t see something happen on the actual screen, it may as well have not happened in the story.
...the planet blows up ON-SCREEN. We see the people of Alderaan die. Obi-Wan's reaction only reinforces that.

The suffering of the Naboo is off-screen, especially since we see the invasion from the POV of the ruling elite, which is actually a problem with the prequel trilogy as a whole.

The Plinkett reviews contain an extended sequence where Mike Stoklassa argues that black people don't watch Star Wars, Billy Dee Williams and Samuel Jackson were basically diversity hires, and has some real classy jokes about black people stealing his TV.

Phantom Menace is one of my favorite star wars films. It can definitely be messy at times, but it's visually stunning, thematically engaging, and sets up the entire 6 film saga as its own mythology that carries the anti-imperial ethos of the OT, and marries it with the ethos of Greek Tragedy.

This is a great video essay, and a strong counterpoint to anyone who complains about the "politics" in the prequels.

And I found myself feeling similar about the Senate scene during the 25th anniversary. Watching that scene just, yeah, it hits differently. I tried to share that with my friends who
