What a waste of time and resources.

Pursuit of profit makes life bad. Let us have nice things! Healthcare! National rail! Council flats! Rent controls!
rebekka.bsky.social
I am 100% in favour of renationalising passenger rail services, but PLEASE can we stop the stupid cycle of building good things, dismantling them, then rebuilding them again??

AI and algorithms have driven me off the internet. Miss you, but can’t stand the robots anymore.

The promise of AI in education is it will save educators time. That's rubbish. It's sapping all our time already in working groups, committees, workshops, and marking anxiety. It's the most time-sapping, exhausting and frankly boring thing I've ever encountered in HE - and it's in my research area.

Unique to America, our health care system is designed not to make people well, but to make CEOs & wealthy stockholders incredibly rich. The result: We have the highest infant mortality rate of any wealthy country on earth. How cruel, how immoral is that? We need Medicare for All.

I wish NPR would run fewer science stories like "how our brains work, part 43" or "the nature of time itself" and more on, say, climate change and ecosystems, fire, or extreme floods. And slip in a mention of how many fired fed employees or grant $ pulled focused on "exactly what we're discussing."

No, you sadist; I would do everything I could to make sure he avoided his father's wrath and got into art school

It will never be enough. The goal is to break the University, not have them meet demands.

Taunting Columbia with the hope of compliance just sweetens the pot with humiliation.
danifriedrich.bsky.social
In the NYT right now, from a Justice Dept lawyer: “I will tell you right now that Columbia has not in my opinion — and the opinion of the Department of Justice — has not cleaned up their act,” Mr. Terrell said. “They’re not even close, not even close to having those funds unfrozen.”

I’m embarrassed that it has come to this but after 5 1/2 months of unemployment and underemployment I am struggling to pay my bills that will come due in April. If you are able and so inclined, I’d really appreciate any support you can send my way.

People say academia doesn't need print books or journals any more - but the printed material may be all that survives the next 50 years, let alone the next 500.

In case you wanted to know some of my thoughts on how student loans would be affected by all this nonsense...here you go! Gift link.

www.wsj.com/personal-fin...
screenshot of the top of the article from the wall street journal. Title reads: What to know about student loans after trump's move to dismantle the education department. Subhead reads: The federal agency manages roughly $1.7 trillion in student loans to nearly 45 million people. By Oyin Adedoyin and Dalvin Brown. Updated March 20, 2025 at 6:06pm eastern. screenshot of the article that reads: Trump has suggested moving the student-loan portfolio to another agency, such as the Treasury Department or Small Business Administration.

That could mean changes to the contracts between loan servicers and the government, said Dominique Baker, associate professor of education and public policy at the University of Delaware.

With servicing changes, there can be headaches and delays. Last year, the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority, or Mohela, a student loan servicer, transitioned record-keeping for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program to the Education Department. While the transition was happening, processing of forms and other information was paused, frustrating borrowers.

“The number one thing I would expect from that type of move is chaos,” Baker said. She said she could see a scenario where people are making payments but nobody is tracking how many they have made.

Fun fact! My retired mother is exploring an ADHD diagnosis after both my brother and I started getting treated as adults. As she says, why struggle with something that you don't have to, just because you're not working?
ericmgarcia.bsky.social
We see a spike in older women getting prescribed with ADHD for the same reason we see the racial gap close with autism. Our understanding of ADHD has grown and therefore, more people who otherwise went undetected are getting the treatment they deserve. This is a plus.

Adult ADHD prescriptions still on the rise, especially among older women
The new analysis by researchers at the National Institute on Drug Abuse also looked into how the medications are being misused.

At the post dept meeting trip to the pub this afternoon, my colleagues and I had a fascinating discussion about handwriting (one of us broke her dominant wrist recently...) The question:

Is it easier for you to write normal script in your non-dominant hand, or mirror script in your dominant hand?

Interested in #Edinburgh women's history? A statue is being proposed to the memory of Elsie Inglis on the High St. This lacks artistic merit, excludes female artists, misrepresents Dr Inglis' legacy & disregards the context of the site. We need your help so pls read this 🧵 👇
