Gonna get really into a niche sport for the next 4 years and try to win a world title.

Will update sporadically
Ohio State and Michigan is about to throw out a massive # for Fox today so the Big Ten wont care but NBC and CBS are paying out the ass and will never get to broadcast that game.

Honey, you barely touched your salad cream
Mayonnaise leads to the next item. Salad Cream. Despite being made by Heinz, an American brand, largely unknown in America. It's not really a "salad dressing" (that's a whole other disquisition and I'm not going down that road, at least not yet)

When the Dallas Cowboys were 3-5-1 earlier this season it is obvious to say that they were in the middle of football chaos.

The thing is… football chaos is sort of their comfort zone.

They are the Bane of Football Chaos. They were born in it.

You mean shunning ESPN means fewer people watch your games, weird
On the field, the Big Ten has caught up to the SEC.

But the SEC is killing the Big Ten in another category: TV ratings. And it's not even close.

The reasons for that aren't just the football product: It's also the television partners:

Tangiblely related - while NBC is the ND channel, with the ACC deal half the time the best ND games are on ESPN/ABC anyway. Pushes NBC down as a cfb watching destination that way too.

I went out of my way 1 time this year to watch Big Ten on NBC and that was still regulated to 2nd tv
This is good, and I agree with most of these conclusions. The SEC is deeper, Many of the B1G's second-tier TV brands sucked ass this year, and most B1G games weren't close.

I'd add this. Not only is ESPN is dominant in directing the conversation...but I'd argue NBC is uniquely *bad* at it.

Oscar Mayer Big & Juicy Weiners (1993-circa 2004): In order to market specifically to a more adult market, Oscar Mayer released a new fleet of "extra-large, vendor-style hot dogs", developed to reflect "regional tastes" and with a major marketing blitz starring George Foreman. Check this 🧵!

The SEC was the first to do a conference championship game. It would likely be the last to give it up.

As Greg Sankey told me last week: “Have people brought it up in our meetings to me, absolutely. I said: You need to slow down."
