The safety promise of robotaxis is that they will replace private cars

The problem is if you replace a vehicle carrying an average of 1.2 people with one carrying an average of 0.55 people then you need to more than double your road capacity

A robotaxi future is a future without walkable cities
A reminder that cars aren’t a technology problem. They’re a geometry problem.
Waymo privatized another public street:

Chanel approaching 4th, San Francisco

Possibly queued for a Billie Eilish show at Chase Center ~half mile away.

The light rail train on 4th seen passing in front of this roboherd has more passenger capacity than all of them combined.

Talking about perfect timing: Aventon launched an e-bike trade-in program last Friday. They are offering riders a $200 bonus when trading-in an e-bike, *including Rad Power Bikes*, toward a new Aventon. It appears that the trade-in credit might be able to be stacked with Black Friday deals as well

You wanna know what’s safer, more affordable, better for the climate, and more space-efficient than a driverless car?

A bus.
Elon is a bullshit artist but some people are letting negative polarization rewrite their brain to become against objectively good things that he has unfortunately branded himself as being associated with. Actually working self driving cars are obviously good and will likely save many lives.

A big hangup with AV companies in general is that we have existing technologies that are dramatically safer, better for the environment, and move more people at lower price points. It's frustrating to see investment in AVs at the expense of these, as that helps lock in car-centric infrastructure
To be clear this is talking about Waymo way more than tesla

San Franciscans deserve better than to be the constant testing ground for new tech. We are not guinea pigs. We didn’t sign up for this.
There’s a battle brewing over drones – and jobs – in the Mission.

DoorDash, the on-demand delivery app, plans to launch a drone testing site on Folsom Street, but the Teamsters Union Local 665 is pushing back.

Anyone can reverse an overdose, and we should all know how. Naloxone is a social intervention; while our public health systems are woefully inadequate, and the war on drugs continues unchecked, we can empower ourselves and one another to step up.

I coauthored an opinion in Berkeleyside today, focusing on how the 26foot street clearance the Fire Department requires is being interpreted in ways that harm the city.

Opinion: Berkeley should rethink rule requiring 26-foot clearance for fire trucks on city streets
Selective enforcement of an optional state fire code rule has harmed street fairs and farmers markets. If applied uniformly, many streets would lose half their parking. A policy better tailored to Ber...

Ok, working on a research thing: what are your favorite examples of public transit playing a role in a historic US social movement?

For example, ICE protests being held at BART stations or the bus boycotts.

How many more deaths of people walking and biking will we tolerate before we make our streets safer?

This is a crisis throughout the East Bay - a woman was killed in a hit-and-run while crossing an Antioch street yesterday.

We need to rapidly transform our streets to slow cars and protect people.
