This is what happened in our neighborhood yesterday. ICE snatched a human being off of our streets, roughed them up badly, and then pepper sprayed legal observers as they documented it all. This is a daily occurrence happening all throughout Minnesota right now.

Ward 7 Friends, This is a sad, frightening, and infuriating time to live in Minneapolis. While we continue to mourn Renee Good and the many neighbors who have been stolen from us, we also need to prepare as more federal agents arrive here from Chicago and other states to continue to escalate their attack on our city. If there is one silver lining to what has been happening, it has been the response of our community. And while I’m no longer officially your council representative, I do want to do what I can to help us organize to be as proactive and responsive as possible. Now is a time to pull together, and below are some ways you can make a difference. Get Trained & Stay Informed Monarca: While their currently-scheduled trainings are at capacity, we recommend keeping tabs on their list of upcoming events as it continues to grow. The training they held at Loring Park this week had 700 people! I highly recommend getting trained as a legal observer. Immigrant Defense Network: IDN has a number of resources available on their website to help immigrants and allies understand their rights, and will also be doing their own tour of trainings and events soon. Defend the 612: This new organization is a network of local watch groups. Sign up for their list to be mobilized to defend your neighborhood and help mobilize others. NOTE: there is a new neighborhood group covering the Isles neighborhoods (Kenwood, Lowry Hill, West Maka Ska, Cedar-Isles-Dean). Sign up through the link to get access. Unidos & COPAL: These organizations, the partners of Monarca and IDN respectively, also hold other events focused on making life better for immigrants in both the short and long runs. Donate Fundraiser for North Minneapolis families in crisis: Please consider donating to help Northside families with rent, utilities, and food. Funds will be distributed through the area mutual aid network. We're focusing primarily on families in the Camden, Victory, Folwell, and Cleveland neighborhoods. Fundraiser for affected South High School families: Families at the immigrant-dense South High are among those most affected by what has been happening. According to organizers, “funds raised will be used to provide South families with needed groceries and essential items, including but not limited to food, toilet paper, facial tissue, laundry detergent, dish soap, and pet food.” Rent Support for South Minneapolis families: Many immigrant neighbors can’t go to work for fear of being kidnapped at the jobsite or even just while waiting for the bus. This fund will help them and their families make rent and stay in their homes. Fundraiser for Isavela Lopez: Isavela is an activist who was assaulted by federal agents this summer and was subsequently arrested and indicted on four counts, each more ridiculous and fake than the last. She is still raising funds for her legal defense. With a goal of only $5,000, this is one fundraiser where you know each of your dollars will have a big impact. Donate to help ICE observers install dashcams: Following the murder of Renee Good and the federal government’s attempts to lie and cover it up, documenting ICE activity is more important than ever. Thousands of Mi More Actions Attend Your Precinct Caucus on Feb 3: Precinct caucuses are coming up on Tuesday, February 3, and will be key in determining if pro-immigrant, pro-democracy candidates get elected to the State Legislature, the Governor’s office, and the US Senate. I will personally be supporting Peggy Flanagan for Senate, and of course our wonderful legislators who all represent parts of Ward 7 like Katie Jones, Esther Agbaje, Aisha Gomez, and Jamie Long. Contact Your Legislators: Lawmakers at the State Capitol can take action to support Minnesota families by passing an emergency eviction moratorium to protect those who can’t work because of ICE attacks. Find your legislators and call or email them asking for their support for keeping immigrant families in their homes. As Minneapolis becomes the main focus of the Federal Administration’s attacks, the situation and the needs of our community continue to evolve. I am remaining active on social media sites like Bluesky and Instagram to amplify new and ongoing actions and areas of need. Yours, Katie Cashman
