Democrats need to understand that they can just say “It’s insane to threaten Greenland” and “I don’t think ICE should murder Americans in the street” and you don’t need to pretend to link it to the affordability crisis.

Say bad things are bad.

I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it until I die: Mitch McConnell is the single most destructive American politician since John C. Calhoun. And Calhoun basically single handedly caused the civil war.
And it was Mitch McConnell who made it possible by letting Trump off the hook on impeachment, and Kevin McCarthy who proactively brought Trump back into the GOP fold.

Let their shame never be forgotten.
it's hard to remember now but five years ago people really thought the GOP was done with Trump

and now election denial is a core plank in the party platform

Following a white man to war because you disliked the sound of a black woman laughing will go down in American history as one of the dumbest acts of self-sabotage ever.

It sounds like comically specific hyperbole but it is verifiably true that in the same year Elon Musk predicted fully autonomous taxis serving half the nation, what actually happened was his chatbot became a pedophile

There is an undeniable shared understanding in humanity. When people see "I hope this year it will happen" there is not a slightest doubt what "it" means.

The Appalachian mountains and the Scottish highlands are the same mountain range, and are so old they were once connected.
Ok folks: what is your favorite fact that you share with people (maybe a bit too) eagerly?

The best work I know of on this phenomenon- which is behind basically all of why it's so frustrating to deal with corporations now- is this:

Can a school district fire an assistant principal for being grossly illiterate?
Can a school district fire an assistant principal for ranting on Facebook about "demtards"?

(Answer: yes, though the fact he falsely claimed he was hacked, plus his other intemperate statements, surely also contributed)

I honestly think James Cameron’s secret is that he knows he’s really good at what he does, so he does exactly enough of it to fund doing weird shit with deep sea submersibles, which is what he actually cares about. I respect this
I honestly think James Cameron's secret is that he desperately wants the audience to think his movies are cool as hell. He's not snobbishly making films purely to impress critics and other filmmakers OR cynically cranking out slop. He wants expertly-crafted crowd-pleasers.

I reread "Fortress Los Angeles" this morning, thanks to @katewagner.wehwalt.net having mentioned it recently, and am reminded once again that Robocop was a documentary. As a friend says: I want a world where Paul Verhoeven did not have Apollo's gift of prophecy.

I live in Arizona, which would have _plenty_ of water for the visible future if we made one change:

Outlaw the growth of almonds, pecans, cotton, and cattle feed.
All you really need to understand about water usage in the western United States is that every single use - even the ones that sound egregiously wasteful like AI data centers - rounds down to 0 compared to what irrigated agriculture uses

I finished _107 Days_ yesterday. The last 20 pages were *rough*

I've been in a lot of therapy in my life but I really just cannot imagine being Kamala or Hillary. My God.
I think about the Kamala loss every day. I don’t know if I’ve held onto a resentment and attendant grief about an election like this ever before. Even after Gore.

Tammy Faye was surprisingly complicated for an old school evangelical; much more so than the current crop of one dimensional creatures
Tammy Faye was one of the few evangelicals to support gay men with HIV and AIDS at a time when none of her contemporaries were doing so.

Can’t say I can easily picture Erika Kirk doing that

After 2024, I am now convinced at a level of theological certainty that no group of people in government - very much including Democrats - could be this ineffective unless they actively wished to be.

I don't know what other explanation fits the facts.

I retired in March, but today's React vuln should remind everyone that @charity.wtf has always been right: if you have a holiday code freeze, your build-test-deploy-rollback process is completely broken and you should not work on anything else until that's fixed.
