The ability to convince capital markets to hand you a trillion dollars on the strength of obvious bullshit paired with the inability to get a single human to sincerely and spontaneously say they love you is some real punishment of the gods shit.

I’m two hops from Donald fucking Trump.
Off the top of my head, in terms of degrees of separation I managed to get from myself to *Jimi Hendrix* in "three hops," this is a WILD assertion to make

New rule:

You don’t get to host a literary theme party until you produce a 10 page précis, in the author’s voice, summarizing the theme and lesson of the book.

Else, the guillotine.

I know it’s too much to expect them to know their history, but if the American Revolution had a motto, it definitely would not have been “immigrants go home.”

It would have been “get your fucking soldiers out of our cities.”

Kind of amazing to think about how different the world might be today if PayPal had just... failed early on and shut down. You can trace so much nonsense today back to PayPal getting bailed out by eBay.

I had a heart attack at 49. The bill was $300,000.
DeSantis said “Most people, particularly under 50, what they really need is a catastrophic plan that’s affordable, where then they can pay whatever they’re doing out of a health savings account.”

Ron DeSantis says people under 50 don’t have much use for comprehensive health insurance
'Catastrophic care' should be enough for them.

Truly, Chicago is the Platonic ideal of an American city.
I visited Chicago for the first time in my life this spring. I went all over and while I didn't get to see every square inch, all of my experiences were amazing and overwhelmingly positive. The people of Chicago treated me so well! The food was good, the ballpark phenomenal, transportation fast!
BEST BIG CITY IN THE US 9 YEARS IN A ROW.

While critics try to paint Chicago as something to fear, the rest of the world knows the truth — this is the best big city in America.

It seems clear—I think to everyone, now—that a false and illegal invocation of the Insurrection Act is coming before the end of the year. Media outlets should be telling us how they will prepare for this potential Treason. State governments should be telling us. Activists should be developing plans.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. How corrosive it is that public figures are--more and more shamelessly--ripping the copper wiring out of the walls. Integrity is for suckers. Abusing power is fun. Caring about anything bigger than yourself is lame. An elite class of evil toddlers
I continue to think that one of the reasons this country is falling apart is the wholesale abandonment of public virtue as a broadly shared aspiration. Or even something people should be embarrassed about if they don’t have it.

Today’s tragedy at the Dallas ICE Field Office shows how dangerous anti-immigrant rhetoric has become. Words that dehumanize don’t just poison politics — they fuel violence. My thoughts are with the families who lost loved ones as we work with officials for clarity and accountability.

Everyone’s talking about the Kissinger stuff- and it’s terrible- but imagine having Cass Sunstein’s reach and influence and saying “what the country really needs right now is a good, rousing lecture about John Rawls”

I am not even remotely kidding. If we come out the other side of this with even a rudimentary sense of justice, Miller should spend the rest of his hopefully very long life rotting away in actual, literal Spandau.
Good God.

The hell with truth & reconciliation. Refurbish Spandau for these motherfuckers.

What share of faculty during McCarthyism were adjuncts, I wonder.

I feel what this is two bad effects multiplying each other: an authoritarian MAGA that is uniquely anti-speech, and an academy that has created a vast array of always-vulnerable faculty.
