We absolutely can afford a UBI, and we do need it, regardless of any impacts AI ends up having.

The cost of UBI is its net cost, not its gross cost. If you get $15k and pay $7k higher taxes as part of the deal, that cost is $8k not $15k.

Try calculating the costs of not doing UBI. Include fascism.
My Sunday Times piece: The idea that we will need a universal basic income because of all the jobs that will be displaced by AI is gaining traction, but it is wrong on several counts:

We can’t afford a universal basic income — and don’t need it

We can’t afford a universal basic income — and don’t need it
If AI massacres jobs, the state will never find £1.5 trillion a year to keep us going. Targeted help would be far more sensible

Anyone remotely in touch with reality knows we're beyond that, not because people are polarized, but rather people are polarized because it is impossible to deny the depth of the crisis, the inability of capitalism to meet human needs.

Socialism, or barbarism. Which side are you on?

That "sane, middle ground" was never possible, never reasonable, never realistic except in the short run; and the crisis of capitalism has now made that apparent to anyone without self-imposed blinders.

When objective conditions have sharpened society's innate contradictions to the breaking point, no one is more insane than the one crying for a "sane, middle ground."

Well, well, @exploding-girl.bsky.social from the USA. You know, I heard there was a murder in the US and they never caught the guy who did it.

According to Trump's new national security policy, expressing anti-capitalist views is now cause to suspect someone is a terrorist.

I'm an anti-capitalist, just FYI.

He wants us to stay quiet. We need to do the opposite.
Capitalism is ultimately an authoritarian form of economics that fosters the rise of billionaires, monopolies, purchased politics, and wealth inequality. We combat authoritarianism with democracy. Economic democracy is the path forward, not more capitalism for the wealthy at the expense of the many.

Wapo are pathetic fascist collaborators
Washington Post’s commitment to personal liberties does not extend to employing people who criticize gun violence or accurately quote, without comment, Charlie Kirk’s words
Some personal news:

I've been fired from the Washington Post in the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk shooting.

I know this is besides the point but the #1 research supported way to "get rid" of homeless people is to give them homes. It's called Housing First and it works everywhere it's tried, just like UBI.

Elon Musk is fairly openly fascist, and given his enormous wealth, he's a big threat to democracy across the world.
"I really think there's got to be a change of government in Britain. And you can't... we don't have another four years or whatever the next election is. It's too long.

Something's got to be done. There's got to be a dissolution of parliament and a new vote held."

An hour before Charlie Kirk was shot, Nancy Mace told Jewish Democrat Sara Jacobs: “I have a good surgeon if you ever want to get your nose done.”
Nancy Mace plays the victim card on CNN: "It's very one-sided right now. I have never called one of my colleagues the kind of names that we've been called. I've never dehumanized my colleagues."

(Would've been nice for Kate Bolduan to push back on Mace's blatant lies.)

God its so disingenuous to pretend that all CK did was “have horrible opinions”. The man co-founded an organization that’s sole function was to fight tooth and nail to indoctrinate children at school into violent white nationalism. He wasn’t even just a pundit. He was ceo of the baby Nazi factory.

There are a lot of people wanting to praise Charlie Kirk while giving themselves plausible deniability for his bigotry.

When quite often, that bigotry is exactly what they are praising.

"I don't agree with everything Charlie Kirk said..."

When people say things like this we should ask them to explain exactly which of the things he said that they agree with.

Remember, Charlie Kirk said that gun deaths were an acceptable cost for gun rights and that we could reduce gun deaths by having more fathers in the home.

10 years ago when Tyler Robinson was just 12 years old, his conservative Republican family started grooming him with guns.

Of course they had no idea that their son would turn out to be an assassin and murder Charlie Kirk.

Isn’t this the model for most mass murderers?

WOW! Patel has completely politicized the FBI. The so called "engravings" on cartridges found with the rifle used in Kirk murder were manufacturers markings, not transgender and anti-fascist messages. This is a gross example of rhetoric gone wild by MAGA. Talk about trying to inflame like Trump

Charlie Kirk treated millions of people as his enemy.

Sorry about your high-brow ideas, but people have celebrated the demise of their enemies since humans walked upright.

I may not be celebrating, but I am far from saddened or upset.

He wanted us to suffer greatly & be subjugated to white men!
If you're celebrating the killing of Charlie Kirk, you've failed basic love of country & basic human decency.

If you're using the killing of Charlie Kirk to attack certain groups of people & to declare “war on the left,” you've failed basic love of country & basic human decency.
