My most significant takeaway is that we’re learning just how little value the extra round of playoffs -- which has deleterious effects on the regular season -- really has. NBC is paying $200 million a year for their package, those Sunday night games, the Sunday morning ones on Peacock, and the first round. If we assign 75% of that value to the playoff games, it’s $150 million a year, or $5 million per team. That’s what MLB is getting for letting 40% of the league into the tournament, making some division winners play an extra round, turning its September into battles not for division crowns but for seeding, letting its best teams coast for six months. Five million dollars per team per year. One Mauricio Dubon. One Jason Adam. One Yoan Moncada. The wild-card round is both a competitive and a financial failure.

Why I'm not too interested in the expansion/realignment talk at the moment Rob Manfred showed up to the ESPN broadcast booth during Sunday night's game in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. During his appearance he talked about the possibility of expanding the league to 32 teams and realigning baseball's divisions in the process. Since then a great number of baseball writers and sports media outlets have weighed in with their expansion and realignment takes, the sort of which you see every few years. Most of the takes you see when this topic comes up put me in mind of fantasy baseball or Dungeons & Dragons or things like that. It's a chance for the writer to imagine new possibilities and mess around with current reality with an almost open-world gameplay mindset. And it can be fun! I mean, it's interesting to contemplate chucking the AL and NL for an East-West setup. To imagine putting the Yankees and Mets in the same division. To look at a map and think about what new city might make for a good expansion site and, hey, wouldn't these be great nicknames and colors? I've played in that sandbox myself many times over the years and I've enjoyed it. The problem I have with this is that I know what game Rob Manfred is playing with this at this particular juncture and I'm not particularly interested in taking the bait. As you no doubt know, the current Collective Bargaining Agreement runs out in a little over a year. As you also know if you've regularly read this newsletter, Manfred is already stumping and triangulating and doing whatever he can to prepare the ground for the owners to win that negotiation. The most obvious example of this has been his tour of clubhouses in which he's tiptoed on the line of unfair labor practices by trying to convince players that the league needs a salary cap. This follows on the comments from multiple owners over the past year about how a salary cap is essential. It's the same basic gameplan the owners have had for over 30 years. They barely attempt to hide it anymore. While it may not seem like it at first blush, the expansion and realignment talk is a part of that. It's being floated now in an effort to get the public excited about it. Which, as noted above, is not hard. People eat that stuff up. Once the public is good and excited about it, Manfred and the owners will inject expansion into the Collective Bargaining Agreement talks. They will, after a year of the sorts of articles that are being churned out this week stoking public opinion, take the position that expansion is a wonderful thing and realignment is an inevitability. Manfred hopes that doing so will put the players in a position where they will feel practically obligated to agree. And yes, 52 new MLB roster spots, 80 new 40-man slots, and eight new affiliated minor league clubs is a legitimate enticement. But, in casting it as a gift to the players and fans alike, he and the owners will also demand concessions. In this case, I presume, a salary cap. Which is to say: what Manfred said on Sunday was part of the owners' labor agenda. As will almost anything else he says over the next year. Manfred wants us to play the "ooh, wouldn't it be neat if [City] had a team and if this crazy but fun radical realignment scheme happened?" game so that when the players balk they will get blowback from the press and from fans who will believe that, if not for the greedy players, we could have so many cool new things. I'm not really all that interested in doing that. At least not now. He can get back to me when the overtures are genuine. And, for that matter, when the league no longer has two teams which are virtually homeless and a handful of others who are barely putting a major league product on the field, which renders the promises of expansion pretty hollow.
