There were prodigies and portents enough. We must blame ourselves for misinterpreting them.

I am, I would way, sanguine about broad adoption of passkeys. They’re definitely not right for everyone. I do think it’s too early to push them as hard as we are, given just how wide the quality range of implementation is at the moment.
A few issues I’ve seen this past week:

Trying to figure out my social media situation over the holidays and it feels impossible lol:
- Openvibe too buggy
- Mastodon in browser or Ivory fills up my TL with random convos between people I follow

I really wish SPM integration wasn’t an afterthought in Xcode. Just had to explain to a colleague that getting an error about Git being unable to change directories inside the SPM cache dir means that it was unable to clone a private repo due to missing GitHub credentials.

It occurred to me that memory safety bugs have a sound, but you probably never heard it unless you played DOS games in the 90s. Its the loud ass static burst a soundblaster card makes when trying to turn uninitialized memory into audio samples.

It took an extra few days but as of this morning, all Australian YouTube accounts with a date of birth aging them under 16 have now been closed, meaning no more parental controls and mandatory ad viewing even if parents pay for YouTube Premium Family. Insane decision.

Wtf Apple Pay allows a merchant to change the shipping fees after you confirm with Touch ID? What was the point of me waiting for the fee calculation then?

I take pride in writing succinct bug reports that will exactly explain the issue when the right person looks at it.
But I keep forgetting that it needs to get through everyone else first.
And that includes a fucking LLM now. So I have to write 3 bugs reports now to alert someone to a broken release

The whole thread is worth it, but this kicker is absolutely the real real
We’re watching a shift where AI simulates the cohesion and reinforcement that used to require an entire online community. A single person can now build a complete parallel reality with nothing more than a prompt window. Which seems bad.

Chrome recently enabled this feature by default and if you’re on a VPN like Zscaler, you’re now getting absolutely bombarded with permission requests.
I really wish Chrome had a “why am I seeing this” button to make it more obvious that CGNAT is to blame.

I don’t have an MBA but that seems like a lot of money
ICYMI: Microsoft’s charge “implies a more than $12 billion quarterly loss at OpenAI, said Firoz Valliji, an analyst at Bernstein.”

That “would mark one of the largest single-quarter losses for a tech company in history.”

It’s just a momentary diversion on the road to the grave
“At the same time, more than half of Gen Z members say they are struggling to make ends meet, yet a majority buy themselves a small treat, such as a pastry, coffee, or sweet, at least once a week. That can lead to overspending…”

I’ve watched this kind of thing happen from the inside as well, although for a different industry. Building a better product just never comes up. It’s all about MBA bullshit like network effects, cross-selling, etc.
All while countless companies around you fail to do the same thing.
I legitimately didn't know they were competing with Steam and it's crazy to me that they burnt so much money on what sounds like something with very little (or wildly misguided) market research.
