I don't like that LinkedIn has become the most active social media for science. It feels less personal than twitter/bluesky.

The polar vortex is still extending further south than usual, but its southern edge has slid up from the Gulf of Mexico towards Kansas. It is being pinched by two large highs on its eastern & western flanks. (winds @ 10 hPa).

Reading Empire of AI by Karen Hao, and I am really struck by how different the AI boom might have been if there had been a parallel explosion in demand for well-maintained data-bases.

It is a time of wonders. When someone can publish a scientific article in a society journal that he didn't write, about some trivial software he didn't write & the only conclusion is that yes, you can get away with this sort of thing.

They managed to totally rehabilitate Walz by being jackasses: why not do the same for Lemon?

You must admit that LLM's can be kind of amusing, if you ask the right question. They also don't mind being cruel to each other (much like their human reviewer counterparts).

I'm a little thrown by calling these "encrypted peptides" since all mammalian bioactive peptides are cut out of larger, translated protein substrates.

Discovery of Encrypted Peptides in a Human Matrix Metallopeptidase
The human proteome represents a vast, largely untapped source of encrypted bioactive peptides with therapeutic potential. Here, we report the discovery and functional characterization of three antimic...

I spent more than 20 years on grants panels in the US & Canada. In that time, I saw very few truly original grants funded. The overwhelming number of funded grants were anodyne, middle-of-the road, incremental projects dressed up with some language implying that they were bold steps into the future.

Phosphorylation of a protein's C-terminal residue is not as common as at N-terminal, but it does happen. If it is a pT acceptor, it is most likely to look like the pic below, with an adjacent nward low complexity acid patch. Maybe the same kinase/phosphatase families involved? #proteomics_101

americans hate it when they're shown on tv doing something cool
TOM HOMAN: “We’re going to create a database where those people that are arrested for interference, impeding and assault, we’re going to make them famous. We’re going to put their face on TV. We’re going to let their employers, in their neighborhoods, in their schools, know who these people are.”

UK universities are cutting tens of thousands of staff because of a 6% drop in international enrolments.

Canadian univerities are looking at drops of 50% and are cutting nowhere near as many staff.

Yet.
UK institutions suffered a record fall in international student numbers last year, with significant drops in enrolments from India, China and Nigeria at some universities #highered #Edusky https://ow.ly/aesG50Y4hh0

N-terminal serines can be a popular place for phosphorylation, particularly with proteins that have a lot of rigid structure. These acceptors have a cward low-complexity dynamic domain, but on the nward side, an acetyl + blue sky (I call it a no-complexity domain). #proteomics_101
