SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.

I love his delivery of his final line to Willa, where we get the quiver of emotion and regret— but he keeps lamenting she doesn’t have manners, making it pretty clear that he just wants a child with loyalty and obedience, a stark difference from Bob’s “be honest with me” parenting.

35 years ago today KING OF NEW YORK was released in theaters. Abel Ferrara’s gritty operatic crime saga has had a long arc to modern gangster cult classic, but this grim vision of the NYC criminal underworld cresting into the 90s deserves its place in the canon.

One Battle After Another is as good as everyone says, kind of a monumental picture. Without spoiling, it’s very fundamentally about feeling like you’ve aged out of your radical credentials, but that’s okay, the love that fueled that action will continue beyond you. Surprisingly sweet and hopeful
