A comic book page: in the first panel four boys are playing a card game on the sidewalk in front of a very damaged masjid. The grass is overgrown and there is do not enter tape crisscrossing the door. A sign reads "Masjid E Bilquis, we ve moved 1312 hawthorne, jummah fri". In the second panel, a word bubble coming from off-panel says "Mash'Allah, what brave boys!", and the four boys look up. In the third panel a young man in a hoodie and jeans stands in front of the boys. He has a camping backpack on his back. "Aren't you scared of jinn out here?" he asks. The boys are back to their game and completely unimpressed. "Yeah, right, mister", says one. Another replies, "We recite Ayat Al-Kursi to keep the jinn away." In the third panel the young man is smiling and says, "Yes, but this is an abandoned masjid. Jinn love abandoned, lonely places. My uncle was walking through the desert alone one night when he saw someone else on the road with him. The other man's face was covered, but he had the legs and feet of a goat." In the fifth panel the boys are all in on this jinn story and some of them are even getting scared. The young man is off panel but continues, "The only thing that saved my uncle was the basmala - when he got home, his hair had turned completely white." In the next panel two of the boys consult on this information: "My khaala said that jinn have backwards feet..." "I heard they can possess you if you look in the mirror too long..." In the last panel the boys run across the street away from the young man. "I..I gotta go" "Me too!" "Me three!" "So long, mister!" The running boys encounter a police officer who is holding up a Missing flyer. "Say, boys, have you seen..." The boys are not stopping. "Not now, mister!" one of them hollers. The officer turns to look after them and adjusts his hat. "Huh," he says. In the third panel there is a closeup of the missing flyer; it is a teenager or young woman in a hijab named Aisha Zaheri, who has been missing since May 13. The boys run off in the distance and the officer says "Wonder what got into them..." The next panel is inside the damaged mosque. The young man we saw earlier has set up a sleeping bag in a corner. His backpack is at the foot of the bag and to the left of the sleeping bag are a prayer rug, a Quran, and a camping lantern. He is off panel but says "Not bad..." In the next panel he hears a voice from outside: "Looks like those kids who usually play around here cleared out." The next panel is a shot of the exterior of the mosque. Two different police officers are having a conversation. One is older and paunchy with a buzz cut and the other is slight and freckled. The older one says, "Thought setting this place on fire would get those towelheads outta here, but they just built a new one. We've got somethin' else lined up for them tonight at 9." The younger cop asks, "The new one? Off Hawthorne?" "Yeah." "All right. I'm outta here. This place gives me the creeps." In the last panel the young man thinks, "So..." He is now wearing black gloves. A police car drives past a new sign for Masjid E Bilquis. In the second panel, a closeup of our young man's gloved hands. He checks his watch. It is 9:00 pm and he thinks, "Right on time." There are leaves surrounding his hands. In the third panel, the two officers from before walk toward the mosque and our young man, in a black outfit complete with long jacket and mask, drops out of a tree in the background. The next four panels are a fight scene: First, crouching, he disarms the older cop while also giving him a forearm to the yambag region. The older cop exclaims "URK!" Second, he rises from his crouch to punch the young cop in the stomach. The young cop says "Choof!", but he has a sap in his left hand. The older cop groans "OoOoG..." from the ground. In the third panel the young cop saps our hero across the cheek while saying, "%*$@&!!" In the fourth panel, the young cop reaches with his right hand for his service weapon, but the older cop is getting up and tells him to stop. In the next panel, the older cop says, "We'll deal with him later - light th' fuse!" The younger cop, bending over to light a fuse, says, "Yeah, yeah, you don't gotta tell me twice!" A voice off panel yells, "HELLO??" In the next panel our hero's eyes open wide and he thinks/realizes, "Someone's inside...!" In the next panel a woman in a hijab opens a door into the night. She looks suspicious and says, "What's going on out here?!?" In the last panel our hero begins running toward her, hand outstretched. The words LOOK OUT appear in the background as if he is calling out to her. In the first panel is an explosion - BOOM! - small pieces of building fly out from the explosion. In the second panel our hero is laying over the hijabi protectively and is starting to get up. A smoke cloud is in the background and small debris is still falling. In the third panel he looks alarmed and asks, "Sister? Are you all right?" The hijabi is not amused and says "I would be if u would get offa me!!" They are both dirty and smudged. In the fourth panel the hijabi adjusts her hijab. She is very irritated. "I'm glad I came to this country for "safety", she says. Our hero has one finger up and is looking perplexed. He says, "Um...Sister?" very hesitantly. A police siren starts in the background. In the next panel we start to see the police lights break up the night sky. The hijabi brushes dirt off her sleeve and says: "*tch* Here come the cops to see their own handiwork..." Our hero looks shocked and says "You know about this too?? Listen - meet me at the old masjid in a couple days - I gotta go." In the sixth panel our hero has disappeared but our hijabi has not noticed: "And why would I - Allahu akbar. I JUST bought these shoes!" In the seventh panel the hijabi realizes that Our Hero has left and says, "now where'd he go?" In the eighth panel, a police car has arrived - it's the officer who had the missing flyer on the beginning of page two. He shines a flashlight at the hijabi, who is looking annoyed and wrapping the long end of her hijab around her neck. "You all right here, ma'am?" the officer asks, also saying into his radio "unit 54 here - might need a medic. Ma'am? See anyone suspicious?" The hijabi turns her head and says "huh? No..." In the last panel our hero runs down a street, the masjid in the background. A caption reads, "I didn't see nobody."

A couple weeks ago we got a lovely note from someone on the other side of the country thanking us profusely for ILLing a book to them. Curious, we looked up the book they borrowed.

It would have cost $1,200 for them to purchase it.

ILL is one of the things I love most about libraries.

if i had a tiktok it would be videos of me removing insane amounts of clear tape from the covers of BCPL books with a razor, wiping the crud off covers with alcohol wipes, and the occasional book repair. these books are grungy and these ppl use too much tape.
