CITY OF BRASS x STORMLIGHT ARCHIVES

“Do what you’re told and your destiny will unfold.” In a caliphate where everyone sees their divine purpose as clairvoyance, Hadi’s fate commands patricide. When he defies it, his foresight fades and his life as a rebel heretic begins.

Here is my main opinion on AI, in every capacity: What is the point of technology? Is it to make our lives better and easier, or is it to make a very small percentage of people richer? The latter is what AI is doing. The people actually doing the coding are making themselves redundant.

Excited to return to #FestivalOfMonsters at @ucscmonsters.bsky.social in October with @samlangsdale.bsky.social and @passableghost.bsky.social. Our panel, Monstrous Transformations: Bodies, Gender, and the Disruption of the Social Self, is all about body horror, ecological collapse, and St. Vincent.

Being a creative in 2025 is like, okay, time to work: first, let’s have a good cry about all the cruelty we are powerless to stop in the world but not too long, don’t want to drown in despair and alright time to draw my silly little pictures now

The first long interview with the mysterious Clair Noto, one of the 1st women comics writers, who wrote the cult fave Red Sonja series in the late 1970s, and about whom little is known.

She tees off on Roy Thomas, who she accuses of stealing credit, & Frank Thorne, who she detested. Juicy stuff!
“There Isn’t A Word of Truth In Any of That”- A Conversation With The Elusive & Prolific Clair Noto on Hollywood, Marvel, and Her Erasure from Red Sonja
Who is Clair Noto? Clair Noto is a footnote in the history of Marvel Comics. Superciliously deigned as a co-writer (which she denies), lazily written off (if written about at all) by supposed fans …

Need some good news? World Central Kitchen is back up in Gaza.
A post from World Central Kitchen's Facebook page, saying "WCK resumed cooking in Gaza after our first aid delivery in 12 weeks." Below are 2 images, one showing 2 men cooking in large pots, the other with text reading "WCK aid trucks have reached our teams in Gaza for the first time in over 12 weeks."

It's Amazon Prime Day, which means it's yet another great day to stick it to Bezos and support indie bookstores instead!

If you wanna shop online, @bookshop.org purchases support a local indie of your choice. Plus, they're doing a sale and free shipping for Prime Day!
A blue background contrasts with white text reading: Free shipping, July 8-11. At the bottom is a white logo for Bookshop.org, and across the image is a purple strip with the Bookshop.org B logo and the words "The anti-prime sale" and "free shipping"

I write about all of this in Chapter 4 of my book Searching for Feminist Superheroes: Gender, Sexuality, and Race in Marvel Comics which is ON SALE NOW from @utexaspress Use UTXSPRING at checkout

Also find the work of Christian Hines and Ravynn Stringfield who have both written extensively on Riri!

-Riri fights extraordinary, superhumans but she ALSO confronts the violence of systemic oppression and has to navigate heroism amidst the banality of evil. 5/
samlangsdale.bsky.social
-The city of Chicago is not a flat (racist) stereotype but almost a character in its own right, and a crucial element of who Riri is. 4/

So, if you enjoy the series let me encourage you to grab Ewing’s comics. They are special for so many reasons:
-Riri’s most important relationships are w/ other Black girls &women. Black women in superhero comics have typically been tokenized—Ewing surrounds Riri w/dynamic Black women & girls. 3/

I have a four month old who thinks sleep is for jokers so I don’t know when I’ll get a chance to watch it but from the previews it looks like the show follows a lot of what Eve Ewing established in her run of the comics. 2/

I wrote about this a bit in my last book but it really shakes me that a defining feature of this catastrophic era is that we just keep going to work. We work through pandemics, we work through natural disasters, we work through economic calamity, we work through coups, we work, we work, we work.

I made a comic on how we got here & trump/supporters - collecting things he's said that would seem to have been over the line - and how that never seems to be the case is the real problem...

A comics page in black and white. Arranged in 5 tiers of panels, each with successively smaller panels and more per row - with the exception of the first. Opens with no panel border - silhouette of a hand in a gun position - with smoke coming from index finger. speech balloon “i could stand in the middle of fifth avenue and shoot somebody and i wouldn’t lose any voters, ok?” Caption “this is perhaps the most truthful thing trump has ever said…” Same row - more than half page width panel with three drawings of trump making jerky body distortions mocking cerebral palsy. Caption “one might’ve assumed when he mocked reporter serge kovaleski that it would cross a line and be the end of him in public life.” Speech balloon “now the poor guy, you ought to see this guy!” Caption “that was naive.” Next row, first panel, slightly more than page width - closeup on trump’s open mouth, shouting “when you’re a star, they let you do it. you can do anything. Grab ‘em by the pussy. you can do anything.” Caption “surely, there’d be no coming back from this?” Second panel - silhouettes of tiki torch carrying rioters with their shirt collars showing. Caption “or this?” Dialogue “you also had some very fine people on both sides.” Caption “and yet…” Third row - three panels, first slightly more than a third, rest smaller still. Silhouette of trump throwing a paper towel roll like shooting a basketball. Dialogue “a great day…” Caption “c’mon…”. Second panel closeup on his lips, dialogue “why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Caption “really?” Third panel closeup on a coiled-style phone cord, dialogue “i would like you to do us a favor, though.” In background words from the first articles of impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanors. Dialogue “the call with ukraine was perfect, with “no pressure.”

Jewish students at Columbia have chained themselves to a gate (already locked) to protest ICE detentions of student protestors. They accuse members of our board of trustees of providing information about students to ICE and are demanding accountability.

Every single member of the Columbia administration should step down.

Through their complicity and their cowardice, they've betrayed their faculty, their staff and most of all their students.

There's no way they can lead that university in any meaningful sense from this point on.
