Hi friends, I know I haven't been super active here since my break earlier this year (it's been a different year). I've decided to take another hiatus from social media but will be posting updates through my website as I mull over how I want to spend my time. Feel free to contact me through there!
Reflecting on social media and loneliness
It's been a different year - not bad, just different. In January I deleted all of my Meta accounts and then took a break from all social media. It was initially just intended to be a month long break but I think it ended up being three months. Since then, I've been somewhat active on Bluesky (basically the only platform I'm on now; I don't really count LinkedIn, as I'm not active there).

Not only is it great to see Victoria getting recognized for being an amazing, and family friendly, cycling city but it's awesome to see all the pride in the many posts about this video here.🥰

What I've been up to in my spare time this year: extricating myself from services run by big-tech companies.
Extricating myself from big-tech
For so many reasons, one of my projects this year, has been to extricate myself from big-tech and it's been a process but I feel like I'm nearly there.1 What started it all? The catalyst was an email from my doctor last fall but, when I think about it, it goes further back than that. I've known for a long time that there are problems with social media and big tech.

We need input from the cycling community, and others, on where to place our “parking zones” for the e-bike share program. Please provide input.

Life of a modern family with young kids in Victoria, the local govt is going all in on creating equity for all types of transportation for whatever you choose to use. Nice to see that cycling is finally getting the space & resources it deserves. IMO single greatest climate mitigation govt can do.
Scenes from my #ebike commute to work each day. The little exercise, feeling the wind and sun, and being in a bit of nature helps balance work stress. I find my days feel far better starting (and ending) this way! #cargobikelife #yyj #saanich

Folks, give @victoria.ca a follow on this platform.

Our comms team is facing the reality of going from 40,000 X followers to 978 Bluesky followers. We’re doing the right thing by ditching the toxic platform, but we need those followers back.

When I had my eyes opened to the benefits of active cities that didn't prioritize the car, I feel what struck me the most was how bicycles moved so many people without adding to the noise, chaos, and relative danger that cars bring to our streets. I could never unsee that experience.

Gotta love the ebike (& e-cargo bike) life in Victoria 😊
I had a lot of fun riding my #ebike downtown to meet good friends at a pub patio. Catching up with friends can seem hard to do when it's busy but it always makes me feel better. It's nice being out to catch the sunset and city lights too.

Same for us! We will hit two years of riding my cargo bike for most trips in the city in October. Two kids in the inner city. My kids prefer the bike to the car & now often ask to ride their own bikes (which we try to say yes to as often as is feasible). I can't go back to driving everywhere now.
This!! We're nearing two years of cargo bike life. It's enabled us to remain a one car family, even as we moved farther from downtown and had another kid.
The affordability of car-light living:

"American households – maybe not most of them, but a significant percentage of them – have the opportunity to dump one of their cars and save a bunch of money."

Urbanists should hammer away at this point, noting how e-bikes/cargo bikes make it easier.

If the bike lane feels lethal, take the sidewalk.

Don't be an asshole, respect the space and safety of those walking, and don’t let some loud mouth transportation purist bully you into riding where you don’t feel safe.

Everyone in the #yyjbike community needs to hop on their bikes and ride up Lochside to say ‘hi’ to the new little piglets! They are adorable (making the cutest little grunting sounds). I just noticed them on my way home last night and literally slammed on my brakes to stop for a visit. 😍🚲 🐖
