Yep. I was in about the very last cohort to receive, as an undergrad, free tuition, plus grants to assist with the cost of living. The grants were means tested based on parental income.

Just a totally different time.
PS: for people younger than me: when I was growing up, no one would have dreamed of taking SAT prep courses, wondering how their choice of extracurricular activities would strike college admissions officers, etc. College was more affordable, and financial aid was gifts, not loans.

The story told here--one where anecdata suggests agency and autonomy have run amok and nameless activists are to blame--certainly rhymes with the NYT's disastrous panic about trans kids. Then you realize it's literally being written by the same author.

Alice Wong was a fierce advocate for disabled people and a brilliant writer.

Her last words were: “Don’t let the bastards grind you down. I love you all.”

I hear you Alice, the fight for disability justice continues.

Except, of course, it’s *not* all he can say.

Cassidy could concede publicly that confirming Kennedy was a tragic mistake. He could call for RFK Jr's resignation. He could schedule hearings, haul the secretary to Capitol Hill, and demand the CDC’s public resources reflect the scientific cannon.
TAPPER: You were the deciding vote that allowed RFK Jr to ascend to the role of Health Secretary. Did you give him too much credit?

CASSIDY: The fact is the scientific community agrees that vaccines are safe. That's all I can say.

Anyway, the idea that we should listen to Elissa Slotkin & concede that the economy was bad in 2024, or that Democrats now should embrace the idea that Biden was wrong to talk about the good economy, is madness detached from empirical reality. Sure, Biden's messaging wasn't good. But this is worse.

Once again, I remind you that this woman cannot be allowed anywhere near the strategy or leadership of the Democratic Party:

Also, stop it with this BS. Biden correctly said the economy in 2024 was good, because it was. Yes, no one believed it. That wasn't his fault.
Slotkin: "He's trying to distract us from the big stories of last week, the Epstein files and economy. He's tweeting 'the economy is the best it's ever been' -- amazing considering the public isn't stupid. It reminded me of Joe Biden. Biden tried to tell us for a year that the economy was great."

The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

If you're a person of influence in this country and you haven't picked a side, maybe now would be the time to pick a fucking side.

Disability education should not be put into HHS because it's not a health issue, it's an education issue. The idea that disability = health is dehumanizing and, frankly, simply wrong.

I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression
The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.
