Anna's Archive backed up Spotify: 86 million songs in 300TB representing roughly 99.6% of listens, the metadata alone is 4TB compressed https://annas-archive.org/blog...
Backing up Spotify
We backed up Spotify (metadata and music files). It’s distributed in bulk torrents (~300TB). It’s the world’s first “preservation archive” for music which is fully open (meaning it can easily be mirrored by anyone with enough disk space), with 86 million music files, representing around 99.6% of listens.

In 2023, seismologists detected a “global hum” originating in Greenland that lasted for 9 days. A rockslide triggered a 200m-high tsunami that sloshed back & forth in a fjord every 90 seconds, slamming into the fjord’s walls “like a beating heart”. [youtube.com]
How climate change triggered a landslide tsunami in a Greenland fjord, vibrating Earth for 9 days
Climate change is increasingly exposing polar regions to large landslides. Tsunamigenic landslides have occurred recently in Greenland, but none have been reported from the eastern fjords. In September 2023, we detected the start of a 9-day-long global 10.88 mHz (92 s) monochromatic very-long period

Today, we remember the fourteen young women whose lives were stolen at Polytechnique Montréal 36 years ago.

Their names are a solemn reminder of the devastating toll of gender-based violence — and the responsibility that comes with our remembrance.

I was chatting to someone today about the film Weapons and they said at heart it’s like a Roald Dahl story, and I thought IT IS. And that’s why it’s so great.

☄️ 40 000 near-Earth asteroids discovered!

Thankfully, none of them are cause for concern for the foreseeable future, but ESA's planetary defence teams are keeping a watchful eye on the skies.

The World Bank’s latest data shows a quiet global triumph: 93% of people aged 15 to 24 can now read and write. In many regions youth literacy has reached or neared universal levels, marking one of the most successful, least reported stories in development. buff.ly/vnsUhLo

15min earlier:
Instead of a kids' table and an adults' table (especially after the kids are grown), big family gatherings should have a loud people's table and a quiet people's table.

While looking up something for class I stumbled upon this figurine representation of Abe no Seimei's shikigami rituals (created for an exhibition on onmyōji at Rekihaku in 2023). It's kind of amazing and I want it badly??

Mandated age verification is a terrible idea and I hope that all services simply block visits from jurisdictions imposing them.

Yes it places a burden on end users from those locations but hopefully it will force the overturn of these ill-considered laws.
bsky.app Bluesky @bsky.app · Aug 22
Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

If you were too young in 2003 here is what Bush told the American people:

1) The Iraq War won’t cost a lot of money
3) We won’t need a lot of troops
4) We’ll bring peace and freedom to Iraq
5) We’ll find WMDs
6) We’ll be welcomed as liberators
7) It will be easy
8) It won’t take long

All lies.

I’m happy that British people will have the right to end their lives with some dignity if they choose.

My mother opted to use MAID to avoid a drawn out death at the age of 96. She’d lead a good life and saw no value in prolonging the inevitable.
