icymi or need a refresh: clean air organizers in LA got more than 300,000 respirators across the southland in the days n weeks as the fires burned, as well as air purifiers, covid tests, & whatever other tools we could get our hands on.

many of us were doing that work before too, & still are today.
…let alone see if there are, say, folks, groups—maybe even a network of groups—leading the way on clean air & disease prevention bc they’ve been doing it for years 🤔

in the absence of formal leadership & the breakdown of regulations from climate to health, we must utilize all other available tools.

Maybe you should learn how to spell affected before demanding a disabled actor walk for you :/

Ns if you’re already providing masks just have the event be mask-required.

I’ve worked enough events to know that masks provided is not doing anything tangible when dealing with airborne illnesses.

Glad I got to become disabled in a world that already had Alice Wong @sfdirewolf.bsky.social in it. I learned so much from her incredible writing & activism. May her memory be a blessing, & may we all continue her work.

sometimes it will just hit me that over a million americans died from covid in a short period of time and we never had a national mourning. we never collectively grieved. we never honored the dead. this feels like a failure

Good afternoon from a COVID cautious workplace!

And guess what? The Chicago Public Health Respiratory Illness dashboard is back 💫

This is a great tool to evaluate risk when going out. It’s a weekly breakdown of positive cases for RSV, flu and COVID.

It really seems like this administration is trying to eliminate the field of public health. MPHs and DrPHs will no longer be considered "professional degrees" by the DOE and, therefore, will face limits to accessing federal student loans.

wearing a mask in, at the very least, public indoor spaces (grocery stores, pharmacies, transit, healthcare) is one of the most basic forms of allyship you can offer disabled people you’re forced share space with.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

we are in an unprecedented untenable situation: wanton destruction of federal public health apparati (already reduced by biden), on top of a precarious, ever consolidating for-profit “care” system that’s been inching toward collapse for yrs as insurance rates soar—& you won’t help prevent illness? 🤨

This is another large loss to our surveillance capabilities.

At this point I have no clue how we will pick the variant for next years Covid vaccine.

We will lose the ability to know when convergence (XFG) or other high mutation changes occur (BA.3.2 we’ve been monitoring)

Cryptic lineages too.
On Oct 1, 2025, GISAID informed us that they had ended updates to the flat file of SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequences and associated metadata that we had used to update Nextstrain analyses since Feb 2020. GISAID's stated rationale was that their "resources are limited". 1/5
