It occurred to me this morning after watching Jon Stewart talk to Tristan Harris about the dangers of unregulated AI - that what is happening in the Middle East feels like a massive, deliberate distraction, to enable the AI titans to build their world dominance. www.youtube.com/watch?v=675d...

I knew Fox News was theater. I just didn't realize it was a repertory theater that recycles actors for different roles.

You'd think a company that had to pay $787,000,000 for deceiving its viewers would be a little more careful about blatantly continuing the practice.

Women candidates here describe what research has long shown: abuse against women in politics is rarely about their policies. It is about policing gender, punishing visibility, and reasserting who gets to speak in public life.

OMG the National Party totally screwed up the vote on the Broadcasting Bill. First they didn’t have signed proxies for the conscience vote. Then they didn’t have the 20 members in the house required for a conscience vote - so the vote is a nullity. Politics 101 learn to count !!!

Which is not to say that the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people and the genocide being inflicted on Palestine isn't real, it absolutely is, but it could be stopped at any time if Netanyahu chose to. And it is taking huge amounts of protest resources, time and attention, meanwhile ...

The thing I hate most about all of this is Edwards being described, inaccurately, as a 'left-wing pundit'. he might have been that many years ago, but certainly isn't now.

What makes biz go delusional about the economy? Oh yeah, their party in power.
How great is the gap between reality + generally agreed right-wing public policy? Dead wrong about public finances + society, no matter how good they are at running own businesses? Via @bernardchickey.bsky.social

While I really don't want to go back to being "the business confidence data guy" of 2019. It is about a 40 point difference in party in power given similar conditions.

It is scattered all over Twitter because it was an albatross around my neck for many years. But I think these are the 3 main graphs.
Every other country's Business Confidence is a better predictor of GDP NZ Business Confidence is uniquely uncorrelated to GDP It is about political reckons and what the past was like

Over 21,000 votes, yes not scientific but it tells you as much about public mood as TV News vox pops #NZPol

Labour has the highest percentage of votes at 47%.
The Green Party is the second-highest at 18%.
National is in third place with 13%.
The ACT Party 7%, NZ First 6%, Te Pāti Māori 3%, and "None of the parties currently in Parliament" 6%

Newsroom is not letting go of finding out about the circumstances of Adrian Orr's exit from the Reserve Bank.
newsroom.co.nz/2025/10/07/o...
Confirming suspicions that the terms of his exit most resemble a non-disclosure agreement, the deal gags Orr from criticising the Quigley or Willis.

In return for payment of six months worth of salary, it bars him from disparaging the bank, its board, individual members of the board, the Treasury, the Minister of Finance or the Government generally.

‘Adrian Orr had confidential information, but more to the point, he was a party to the unsavoury proceedings before his departure. There was such a heightened level of sensitivity around the circumstances of his departure, and what prompted it, that they tried to seal it off.’

Adjunct professor Dr Chris Eichbaum, former Reserve Bank director
But there’s flexibility for it to be applied far more broadly – to stop him speaking to the media, to stop him giving speeches, to stop him publishing a memoir …
