What's interesting as the Thanksgiving Holiday arrives? The first @bgc-argo.bsky.social profiling floats begin to emerge from under Antarctic sea ice each year. Float 5905383 is the first @soccomproject.bsky.social float for 2025/26. It has spent 7.9 years operating under ice.

I feel like "the ocean makes half the O2 we breathe" is the chemical oceanographers version of the "gulf stream = AMOC" misunderstanding physical oceanographers deal with... 🌊
The ocean regulates our climate, nourishes hundreds of millions of people around the world, and produces about half of the oxygen on Earth. 🌊 ✨

So, when you take a deep breath this #NationalRelaxationDay, be sure to thank the ocean. 💙

How does oxygen get from the ocean surface layer to the ocean's intermediate depth and bottom waters? 🧪🌊

I wrote a brief overview of the processes involved and the key regions of ocean ventilation:

My @ternbicycles.com GSD may be the best purchase I have ever made in my life. It's hard to overstate how much I enjoy riding it with my kids. We've been able to avoid getting a second car as well, which is a huge financial help. It was my first ebike and I'm convinced everyone should try one.
This is why I wrote down a cost breakdown of my ebike versus a car a year ago - because I was tired of people saying my Tern was expensive 😂

But also I'm so thrilled that brands like Aventon (even with their issues) have long tails under $2k

My first PhD student, Shannon McClish, successfully defended last week. She's been at the leading edge of research into the linkages between surface production and biological carbon export. Couldn't be more proud of her and her work. Its nice to have something to celebrate these days.

Important to note that what they mean by ebike injuries usually means being hit by a car while riding an ebike.

Also, cars have killed 46 people in the county of Honolulu already in 2025. 46! Ebikes have killed no one.

Everyone is acting like US scientists will just go get science jobs elsewhere and sure some will but there are not anywhere close to enough science jobs elsewhere.

The end result of this will be much, much, much less science, not science happening in different places.
People are talking about the imminent brain drain of US researchers to other countries but that’s not the only way it’s going to look. There is going to be a brain drain out of science and into other US sectors. There are a lot of non-science things you can do with a Ph.D.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.
