Hello, new followers! 👋

I post about a blend of climate, tech, urbanism, and biking. To start y'all off, here's a blog post I made in Sept. 2024 about owning a cargo e-bike, and how it can do 90% of what a car can, but for 10% of the cost: viktorkoves.com/2024/09/21/y...
Your First EV Could Be A Cargo E-Bike | Viktor Köves
EVs are here, but I want to show you that your first EV could just be a cargo e-bike that can replace most car trips, and save you a boat-load of money!

A+ explanation, their short stuff is so great!

Planet Money just posted a video about FILTERING (the “more luxury housing = more affordable homes” paradox)

I can has bread? (it took a lot of work shooting backwards and down in a chair to get these shots 😆)

we can & should build better than this block long Burlington parking lot on Broadway next to the CTA red line. We want more of what makes city living great: more small biz entrepreneurs, more CTA riders, and more housing opportunities for all people no matter your race or class.
Me. Grey hair. Wearing sunglasses on a sunny day. Standing in the massive Burlington parking lot on Broadway right next to the Berwyn redline station . Empty storefronts in the background

This is Berwyn, my red line station ❤️
Imagine instead of this city block wide jewel parking lot, we instead see more storefronts with entrances facing the sidewalk and housing built on top

A great article on the rise of urban biking:

“Surveys show rates of cycling are higher in countries where cyclists feel safest. And there are few things that make riders safer than lanes that separate them from cars... allowing cities to reduce traffic and save money...”

By me this week - the happiest thing I've got to report of late, with a glorious trip over the summer to Montreal

I wish there was a way I could buy just your one article 😢

To anyone who says biking is weather dependant, New Yorkers remind us rain only requires an appropriate jacket

Ladies and gentlemen, we have the answer to my Fisker Ocean question - the electric ride-sharing rules and a big lease agency purchase!
viktorkoves.com
I knew it had to be related to the green rides program! Makes sense that it's a big agency purchase too, no way a bunch of individual people would take on the risk of managing an ocean 😂

This probably explains why I see the Toyota bz4x so much here too

Next: Is there a shadow impact on traffic study?

Here's some more municipal EVs and charging stations by the Hudson River trail

(and @volts.wtf, maybe you'd know more about NYC EV policy specifically, but if not... the rideshare bit might be a good podcast episode!)

Bikes aren't the only thing more widespread in New York - I've seen a lot of EV charging, from fleet options for the parks to this gravity charger, and a ton of odd EVs, like a zillion Fisker Oceans.

If someone knows, I'd love an explanation, but my bet is it's the ride-sharing laws around EVs

And here's some NYC bike scenes from today - I love seeing folks just going about their day, but on a bike
A man in a brown jacket and red helmet on a classic blue Citi bike A woman in a brown dress and black belt and long black boots bikes by on a Citi ebike while a man making deliveries waits at a light A man in blue jeans and a green camo jacket with a blue milk crate on the back of his bike rolling through a bike lane while another deliverista rolls past, and some folks walk past on the left

In New York City there's a few different ways to get around, but some of them are a lot more convenient than others

(also I LOVE how many people bike around New York City. It feels like you're always biking with other people 🥺)

I love biking in New York, I say, then immediately got screamed at for not running a light.

"What are you guys waiting for, Santa Claus?! HE'S NOT COMING!"

New York does have some very pretty buildings

Glad to know CPD isn't the only one that loves parking illegally, NYPD might do it even more 🫠

I love cities, I just saw two girls run into each other in the tripod aisle of the NYC B&H photo store 🥺

Also New York City though - a (half) surface parking lot in some of the most expensive real estate in the country. If only there was a place to put more housing...

Man, New York City. One of very few places in the country where you can be lazy and not want to walk further than 10 minutes from your hotel, but still be spoiled for choice.

12/10 drunken noodles, I picked this spot because I walked based on how good it smelled when I walked by
