Hello, new followers! 👋

I post about a blend of climate, tech, urbanism, and biking. To start y'all off, here's a blog post I made in Sept. 2024 about owning a cargo e-bike, and how it can do 90% of what a car can, but for 10% of the cost: viktorkoves.com/2024/09/21/y...
Your First EV Could Be A Cargo E-Bike | Viktor Köves
EVs are here, but I want to show you that your first EV could just be a cargo e-bike that can replace most car trips, and save you a boat-load of money!

By any chance, are any of my mutuals interested in a gently used Nintendo Switch?

(I finally got the save data off of it, so it's time for him to find a new home)

If you're in a position to be able to donate, please consider supporting our Give to the Max Day fundraiser.

Any amount helps as we work to scale our program in 2026. Our fleet is at least 4x larger than it was in spring of 2025, requiring more $ for secure bike storage, bike insurance & repairs.
Support the Mpls Cargo Bike Library on GiveMN
Park Tool is matching all donations up to $5,000! Help BikeMN reach our $15,000 goal.

The snowy owls sitting on Montrose Pier this foggy morning. The Chicago Park District has closed the pier’s far end to keep people from getting too close.

Of all the major cities in the United States, Chicago provides the greatest value, with robust amenities and culture without correlated housing costs. But if Chicago wants to retain that status, some things need to change.

Commentary: Make 2026 the year to achieve real progress on reforming housing affordability
Growth in and around Chicago depends on lawmakers getting it done, write leaders of Abundant Housing Illinois.

Unabridged also had Paved Paradise as a rec when it came out - they know what's up!
Spotted by a listener at @unabridgedbooks.bsky.social in Chicago. Thanks, Matt!

"De-protecting people on bikes and e-scooters does not support their safety. Moreover the notion that the lack of turn lanes at 18th/Wabash is causing congestion seems dubious, since these streets have relatively low traffic volumes."
Sad to see a project under way halted in favor of danger.

“Blackstone Bicycle Works gave me the opportunity to build this bike up from the frame itself, during my summer internship here, and it was an amazing learning opportunity. It's a Specialized racing bike, and my favorite thing about it is the drop bars. I've never ridden drop bars before. . .” 🧵

By chance, do any of the Chicago urbanists have a measuring wheel I could borrow for a video? (@nikhunder.com or @mclean.bsky.social perhaps?)

Yesterday was the last CyclingXSolidarity street vendor tour of the year, with tamales, tacos, and donuts galore, and tons of people came out on their bikes to support street vendors!

Though this is the year's last tour, the work continues, with buyouts and other events! Want to help? Link below 👇

We have a pair here in Chicago sitting on Montrose pier this week. The last two days they've had a pair of Peregrines fly in to dispute territory with them at 10am.

Nobody tells you the downside of a walkable neighborhood - I don't want to go bike to a new cafe, when I can just walk to the one I go to every week 😔

I biked through here today and they had added the green paint - I'm so frustrated that they are even thinking of pulling this out. Like at worst, give it a year and I promise everyone will move on!
the bike lane construction in question

it goes from 18th/Clark to 18th/Michigan, with a protected intersection at 18th/Wabash

This article has created lots of takes, but it's very thoughtful and nuanced. Here's a great bit:

“And if not giving up our pets means fighting climate change by voting, marching, donating, advocating, and consuming like our pets’ lives depend on it, I think we can all get on board.”
