One of the best things I did in Amsterdam is to tell students that I’d make the taped lectures only available to them when the average turnout at lectures was 67%. Taught them a lesson on collective goods and coordination. It worked!

'It is no secret that student attendance has plummeted in recent years, with near-empty lecture halls a staple of the post-pandemic world.'

Really? I lecture to all our 1st years. Lecture hall is full, not near-empty. Student engagement picked up last year and (early days) seems stronger again. 1/2

This important paper shows a precipitous drop in girls' achievement in recent years, closing a third of the gap with boys.

This is a remarkable coup by UHZ - but does not reflect success of state investment in higher education (which is going down in CH). Rather, it is the model that made U.S. academia so successful: massive private funding. Bizarrely, it is money from a Brazilian foundation. 🤯

Deeply honoured to receive this award from the Academy of Sociology with my co-authors! I hope we’ll see many more replications in Sociology in the years ahead, along with preregistrations and registered reports as leading journals make more space for them.

✨ This new preprint takes a longitudinal, dynamic, couple-level perspective.

Working on writing up a short note (and blog post) trying to explain the distinction between model-based and design-based identification.
