if you were concerned that anthropic might be a little too EA-ish, i have great news!
Anthropic is sending $20 million to Public First Action, a new group which is launching a pro-Sen. Blackburn ad on KOSA today

Defending Our Values PAC is also launching a today backing Sen. Ricketts on keeping advanced AI chips out of hands of adversaries

how do those dashing rogues at ZdotAI keep such a close pace with anthropic's models. tis a mystery...

"simulated thinking" is an interesting concept. you can see it in LLM COTs that answer thrash because "thinking" means interjecting "wait," intermittently. but you can also see it here, where soothing oneself requires simming various open questions in philosophy of mind like they're franchise mode
It’s true that human cognition is poorly understood and the question ‘what makes us human?’ has changed a lot over time as various technologies have emerged.

But the fact that thinking and speech can now be simulated doesn’t call into question thinking and speech themselves.

Prime TDS was great bc it had great writers but Jon was always very spotty when he had to riff during WGA actions, and he's definitely past his prime now

as an IP attorney i magnanimously accept the position of Official What Is Art arbiter. if you're using an unlicensed sample the song better be about what a bad boy you are or it's *on sight*
The only legitimate AI art is using AI generated art to make critical commentary on AI art itself, or taking non-art AI output and making it art. AI generated imagery is a product of theft. AI generated pros is a product of theft. There is no legitimate use of AI art beyond recognizing that truth.

Yeah I've had a pretty big switch on this also. I used to play poker semi professionally and while I'm not for total Hawaii-style prohibition, I really can't believe how corrosive all-the-time access to gambling is. At minimum I think all bets need to be placed in person at a regulated casino.

AI execs complain that TSMC is slacking, preventing their AI boom.

Asianometry explains how complicated semiconductor supply chains are, and the peculiarities of supply chains in general.

Nobody is to blame. The chips are coming.

Rulings like this always simultaneously elicit a fist pump & make me wish Reyes and a few of the other judges who get what’s happening would be a little more restrained about framing opinions to elicit a fist pump from folks like me, because I doubt it helps on appeal.

I think they find it obvious because an LLM is simply predicting next tokens, and that's not what people are doing. I think these are true. But this denies the possibility of emergence. A person is just a collection of cells, none of which is sentient. But a miracle occurs and sentience emerges.

it's great. it's correct. it will be overturned by a two-page interlocutory order that engages with none of it.
Even if you don't have time to read all 83 pages of Judge Reyes's opinion barring the Trump administration from rescinding Temporary Protected Status for 350,000+ Haitians, please at least check out the four-page introduction.

It's a tour de force:

i messed with audio genAI much less than text or images, so i can't say for sure if the narcissism section is excessively nutpicked, but it definitely points to a real trend in these circles. even *prompting* one of these well often requires a baseline of in-field vocabulary and knowledge
